with some electrical components a static shock can fry the whole board or atleast damage parts.

i swap chips in my ecu 5 to 10 times a DAY, when tuning, never take the ecu out, just turn car off.

i forgot to turn the keyswitch off one time, swapped chip, didn't hurt anything.

put chip in 1 pin off one time, started up, misfiring though, just put back were it belonged, no problems.

all of that and never hurt anything in the last 3 yrs of messing with ecu's

on the return rd at the track, my helmet rolled out of my seat, landed IN my computer, bent a few caps over, just bent them back, no problems.

there not all that fragile

i dont unhook ANYTHING, i just swap chips out with the car off.

and have tuned about 10 other cars, just swapping chips out as needed, never unhooked anything.

if you need to RESET the ecu, then yes, pull the NEG off the battery.

my car like to start having part throttle issues every 2 weeks or so, i just unhook the neg bat cable, and reattach, then i'm good to go

BUT, if you need the socket and everthing soldiered in and all that, you have to, of course, take the computer out, take it someone who knows how to do it. then put it back in.

what i've been saying is if your just doing a simple chip swap for tuning purposes

If your installing a chipping kit, disconnect your negative terminal and then just remove the 4 10mm bolts holding your ecu in and disconnect the 3 connectors, set it down on a table and remove the 5 screws holding on the top cover and the 5 screws holding on the bottom cover, De-solder all the spots were your going to install new hardware and then just re-solder all the new spots. put both covers on and connect the 3 connectors reconnect your battery and start the car, take a drive and see if you have any problems or cel's if everything is good mount the ecu back into the car and your done. -ejoner
