LSD Chatter?
I had a Spoon plated 1.5 way LSD fitted about 300 miles ago and it makes the most horrendous clunking/knocking sound when I take a tight bend slowly. It's better when taking the bend faster and goes completely when driving flat out. I can feel bad vibrations through the steering wheel and get a load of wheel judder as though the wheels trying to turn left and right when the clunking sound comes.
I bedded the LSD in by doing figure of 8's of about 10 minutes and that didn't help so put a bottle of Redline friction modifier into the gearbox oil and it's still no better
. What i'm really trying to say is the noise and vibration's so bad that people can hear it from 20-30 yards away and it feels as though something's just about to drop off the car at low speed bends.
Will it eventually bed in and if so how long will it take eg. 1000/2000 miles or is the noise here for good?

You've had zero problems driving the car on the street with that LSD, correct? Any accelerated axle wear or anything?

Correct. It was daily driven for 3-4 years. It's got approx. 110,000 miles (daily driving, auto-x and track) on it now, and is starting to show signs of needing a rebuild.

I had the same problem. What I found out was that I was using the wrong tranny fluid. I used the Motul Gear FF and it was so noisy with vibration. Then I was told to use Redline MTL/MT-90 w/ Ford friction modifier and voila, no more sound even on slow tight turns. BTW, I'm using the Mugen 2-way clutch-type LSD.

Just 1 bottle.

Would this cocktail be good for stock LSD? Cause I find it extremely difficult to get GM Synchro FM here in Canada.

I definitely can't take all the credit here...in fact none of it, in actuality.
I got this hot tip probably almost 7 years ago from Ken aka Turtle at Kensai Racing - a famed and well respected tuner in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
I've just been repeating his gospel because it really worked for me when I had a KAAZ.
Another thing I do suggest is changing the transmission fluid more frequently - this is also not something I can take credit for. It was the advice given to me by Ichishima-San (some of you might know him from a little known company called Spoon Sports
) years ago when he visited Vancouver.
Briefly - he explained that unlike a motor where engine oil is pumped, circulated and filtered, the transmission fluid is "whipped" and the gears are "bathing" (I believe he actually used the term 'onsen' Japanese for bath) in this hot fluid.
Since it is entirely relying upon the OEM magnet and/or the drain plug magnet to remove metal shavings (from when I miss and grind gears
) the transmission fluid can get saturated quickly with all these bits in suspension that can really cause havoc if you tend to enjoy your track events but pay little to no attention to the transmission till you start grinding gears (this is usually followed by 'WHERE CAN I BUY SYNCROMESH?' posts)
It was suggested by him that for a person who sees "regular track time" (that was a bit vague as it varies of course) one should change the transmission fluid every 2nd ENGINE oil change.
N1-R, who no longer frequents this board was paying attention and practiced this recommendation and despite his higher mileage car, his transmission definitely felt smoother than mine. I KNOW there are a lot of other variables such as driving conditions - even the driver (I am infamously known for ruining gearboxes
) but I think this is sound advice offered by somebody who understands the average enthusiast thoroughly.

My Cusco LSD does the same thing...you get used to it.

what fluid do you use?
You might be surprised at how much more livable a clutch pack LSD is with the proper fluid...
Though if you have a very aggressive lock set, it may pop no matter what you use.
I just find it silly that some people LIKE the popping and chatter .... maybe it's more hardcore or something...

Oh, I should have been more specific.
My R has the stock LSD. Currently the synchros seem to be on their way out. Just want to see if there is any secret formula to delay fixing them.

GM or pennzoil syncromesh appears to be the secret sauce that works for most with syncro troubles.

I used GM SM. It was really only really chattery when it was cold, once the tranny warmed up it wasnt bad at all.
