Default New Supersticky Tires Coming from Kumho and Toyo

Thanks to a link in another forum here, I read on another board that both Kumho and Toyo are planning to introduce new tires next year, and showed them at the SEMA show. These appear to be "dual purpose" tires designed to be used for both street and track, similar to the Falken Azenis RT-615 and Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R.

Toyo Proxes R1-R:

More choices are always a good thing.

Nothing other than what I've read on the Tire Rack website, but thanks for the reminder. It does indeed appear that Dunlop is getting into this market also, with its Direzza Sport Z1, now available in sizes including 195/55-15 for Integras and '97-00 Civics, and 205/50-16 for many Preludes. It's also pretty reasonable in price, a lot closer in price to the Azenis RT-615 than the RE-01R.

Apparently, the new North American R1R is not just the exact same old R1R from Asia

Few tires are clean sheet projects and it would be rather silly to dismiss it as something old that was sold in Asia. Afterall, CSP class this year was won by a new size Hoosier tire that can trace its roots back many years... I was told that particular tunning went into the 225/45/15 construction with the US Autocross STS2 competition in mind.</TD></TR></TABLE>

I can't wait to see the 195/50/15 R1R against the 195/50/15 RE-01R in some autocross testing... If toyo can beat the RE-01R.... Those 225/45/15 R1R are going to [b]destroy.[b]

I wouldn't get any of those. The drag radials and NT-01 are track tires; they'll last you maybe 5K miles on the street. Drag radials are not particularly good at cornering; they're designed to allow the sidewalls to deform, the opposite of what you want for cornering. And track tires need to get hot to be really effective.

As for the KDW, it's really nothing great, nowhere near as sticky as the tires we're talking about here. (BFG also makes the KD, which is a lot more similar, although not quite as good as the Azenis and a lot more expensive.) The KDW is a good dry-wet summer tire with a big-buck price; you can get similar performance for about half the price with the Kumho SPT, or you can get much better performance for a similar price with the Goodyear F1 GS-D3, if you can find a size that fits your car.

I can't wait to see how many people confuse those two tires due to the similar names.

According to the Tire Rack's latest brochure, the Kumho Ecsta XS should be available starting in August.

Having more choices in really sticky tires is always good news.

W00t!

My RT-615 Azenis autocross tires have 1/32" of tread left (or 3 events, give or take).
Now if only they'd make a 225/40-16 so I don't have to buy new wheels...

Do you think the Kumho Ecsta XS is more comparable to the Toyo R888 or the R1R?

Definately the R1R. The R888 is a R compound tire.

Ditto. R888's are in a totally different ball park.

There also a $100 rebate on the Bstones RE-01R's now. Essentially all my STS competitors are using the Bstones, while one of them is switching between the R1R's and Re-01R's. I'm picking up a set of the re-01r's in the next month or so.

For rain and slick pavement, R1R's hands down. But longevity and dry it seems to be favorable to the Re-01r's. Plus the Bstones can take the heat better it seems.

Those Kuhmo's do look interesting though.

Are you sure about that? I haven't heard anything about this, and don't see anything about it on the Bridgestone or Tire Rack websites. If this is for real, can you please provide a link to details about the rebate?
