*PiCs*My ugly civic and shaving of side moldings *PiCs*
Well. here is my triple (quadruple?) colored civic.
Got in an accident a while back. Got the car all straightened up, but never painted. Saving up for a full paint job inside and out.
Shaving a few things. Like my side moldings, and the antenna.
It's ugly but fun.
Here are some pics for the hell of it.
I'm thinking about doing a Shaving side moldings How-To. Don't know yet.
Pics:
Start of sanding, get down to the metal:
Fiberglassed my fingers together cause I had no gloves. Works wonders for you lungs too

Here we are in the middle. Pink is for bondo.
Passenger side. A bit more sloppy.
Errr.. EG6 wing, and J's racing pillar bar.

ummm hmmm...
clean
Shaved side molding cost $40. First time shaving side moldings ain't too bad; I guess.

Im not a big fan of the shaved side moldings but i cant wait to see your car finished....What color will it be??? I give u a lot of respect for doing that all yourself....
ever consider donating your quarter panels to my hatchback? non-rusty quarters for hatches are hard to find
Did you fill in most of the dip for the moldings w/ fiberglass then bondo over the 'glass? I was going to weld sheet metal over the moldings on my car and take off the door handles while i am at it. post some pics when you get it done / painted

that's awesome that you do all of your own work
is it true that the bondo will eventually fall out?

From what I've seen, you need to sheet metal over those big grooves where th moldings were. They are too big to fill with only bondo. I have a feeling you'll be posting up pictures in a few months of the bondo cracking. Keep your fingers crossed.
that is the cleanest blur out of a license plate i have ever seen
use those photoshop skills and show what color the car will be when you are done with it..

I can tell you now that you are going to regret doing that, and that you are doing it wrong, when it gets painted it's not going to look smooth, it will have a lot of waves.
not to rag on ur car or nothing, But a buddy of mine works at a body/paint shop and you may be in for a lot of "touch-up" jobs using the fiberglass - bondo combo.
(like i said no ragging) But you should of had a strip of steel tack welded over the whole gap, then used polyurethane filler to fill in gaps, this will prevent any cracking like you'll get from bondo, like when you shut ur door.
But i give you props for having the guts to do it ur self. post finished pics when done

Yeah some people do weld in plates. I don't have welding tools. So I fiberglassed. I actually started work on the passenger side in the middle of december. Never finished so I just primered it up till I had a chance to get back to it. The parts we did finish up on that looked the same. We are pretty much used more fiberglass than bondo on the passenger side. The driver side we tried more bondo than fiberglass... No wavy ness so far. We fiberglassed the first layer so we made sure the holes were coverd up. Water and moisture would get in from those holes so that'd rott the bondo and I could see wavyness happening if the holes weren't covered up. But for the last 6 months it's held up find. Haven't really been worried about it.
I've spoken to a few body shop guys lots of people have done shaved side moldings in different way.
Some guys do weld their lines in. I also know a guys who cut cardboard to the exact size of the side moldings, and dipped in fiberglass resin to and shave his side moldings that way. My body shop guy shaves side moldings by using something called liquid metal. Which is like bondo, just a harder. He swears by it.
So there are lots of way of doing it. Just gotta choose yours.
I think it'll be fine. If I do have problems I can always fix it up. So far so good.... I used more fiberglass than anything.

tight, glad to see foo's not getting knocked for shaving stuff. I have tool doors with no handles and no moldings. I hade them welded up then the doors where body filled and sanded smooth. Sorry you didn;t have access to a welder. Would have saved some weight on all that inch thick bondo, but keep up the good work. I need to get some pictures up.
The only way that is not going to crack is if you take the fiberglass way up into the doors. If you just use the glass in the recessed line, it WILL crack. Trust me, I have done EXTENSIVE filling/shaving of everything when I was building my car for a display for my business. One of my good friends is the Midwest Rep for PPG/ICI autocolor (ICI is PPG's higher end stuff)
Now I have learned that its not even worth it, and my money can be better spent elsewhere. But thats my stupid opinion. Here is a pic of my car in primer (sealer tinted yellow):

to you for the work though!! I always do my own everything, except welding, fabricating, and machine work. Better that you know what's going on under that paint.

You're going to have waves where the fiberglass is. when I did mine (door handles) we took the doors off. Laid the doors down face up, put ice packs around the area we were going to be welding, because the door wil get extreamly hot and warp or burn a hole strait thru it. You gotta take it one tack at a time.
Also if you live somewhere that gets really hot duing the summer you will see the lines of bondo.
Good luck though! I give you props for doing it yourself.
