I accidently shifted into reverse at around 40 mph...
I was driving my 99 Civic si today and I fucked up pretty bad. My mind was elsewhere, because I've had family problems.. I wasn't thinking and I approached a red light.. It changed to green and I was still rolling at about 40mph. I went to put it into 4th, but for some reason went over to the right and down. That's right REVERSE. It didn't go into reverse obviously, but as I pushed it down, it grinded for very rapidly for about 1-2 seconds.
I was just wondering if I could have fucked anything up at all.
Thanks.

yeah, that's pretty bad. if you haven't noticed anything then i wouldn't worry about it. change the tranny fluid, see what happens. other than that, you can relax.

That's comforting.. Can you be more specific?

i always wonder what would happen if you were going crusing speed and put it in reverse.... i think the grind is design the warn you though , i don't think it harmed anything as long as you didnt push it all the way in and let the clutch out.
No I never let the clutch out.. Just barely pushed it down into reverse, but definitely not all the way into gear.. The car didnt jerk downwards or slow down at all like when you misshift.
Any more insight appreciated.

Oh, in that case you're probably alright. Like philosofy1 said, drain your fluid and run a magnetic tool through it to see if you pick up any metal shavings. If not then you're good.

100% sure its fine. the trans is designed to grind and not engauge if the car is even moving, go try moving forward at 1mph and try putting it into reverse, it wont engauge, it'l just grind.
they tried this on mythbusters, i saw it last week. they took a like 87 crx 5 spd for their manual shift in the test. got it up to 50mph and he sat there with both hands on the shifter, yanking it into reverse. woudlnt engauge.
Honda designed the transmission to not engauge even if u tried. On my car (u sed to have a d16y8 in it, now its an ls/vtec swap with gsr trans)(im prretty sure this is true for all b and d series transmissions) you cant go directly from like 5th to reverse, theres a stop. you have to go from like neutral or some other gear, it wont let u go down from 5th into reverse. so i dont know how the expletive u did this lol because it should have stopped you, you msut have ripped it into reverse O.O

grinding = dogteeth on the gears not engauging, doggears dont chip that easily so theres no chips of metal floating around in that tranny. i would bet money everything is perfectly fine.

Yeah, but you probably didn't do any damage, though I'd change the trans fluid, then wait like 100 miles, and change it again.
Other than that I wouldn't worry at all about it.

Put it this way, change the transmission fluid if it makes you feel better. just keep driving and if noting happens then your fine but if something goes wrong, then replace transmission gears. simple as that. I have grind the gears a couple of times and the transmission is still working. just like everybody said, you'll be fine, specially if it was just that one time.

From: TRILLINOIS....WAY downtown, jerky.
I would just not worry about it at all. People grind gears all the time. It's not a big deal. If you were supposed to change your fluid every time you grinded gears, Honda would sell out of MTF every day.
If your fluid hasn't been changed in a while (30k or so), I'd change it just for maintainence reasons.

reverse doesnt have dog teeth, its a direct spur type gear, that pushes in place. there is no shift fork, or synchro either.
there is nothing wrong with the thrans, keep driving, its a honda, ive put them through way more abuse and they still go on more than the energizer bunny
