If the timing belt and/or balance shaft belt breaks on one of these engines, does this engine suffer from valve damage or not?

 

Not <U>always</U> causes bent valves. It is possible.
You can check for bent valves; get the old belt off turn the crank 90 degrees from TDC, that puts the pistons 1/2 way up. pull the valve cover off. then rotate the cam, so that you close the valves at each cylinder. with the spark plugs out you can use a tight fitting hose in the spark plug hole and blow thru it to listen for air escaping thru the intake or exhaust, while that cylinders valves are closed.
