when i shift from 1st to 2nd, sometimes i have to really pull it hard in order to get into 2nd gear. it does that going from neutral to 1st or 1st to 2nd. after 2nd, its fine.

Does it grind when it goes in or just hard to get in?

I am having that problem, but I also have the original clutch and my car has 168,000 miles on it. So I'm guessing my "rough shifting" and not going into gear is my clutch.
I changed my master and slave cylinders about a month ago.

it doesnt grind, but it's just hard to put into gear. once its in gear, its perfectly fine. also, the reverse doesnt have any problem. only 1st and 2nd.

what about when the car is off? can you shift freely into gear or are u still locked out? could be a bent shift fork.. spend a couple hours jamming it back and forth from N-1, 1-2 and itll smoothen out if thats the case.

I had a problem like this. Try popping up your hood and check how much tranny fluid you left. if its low you should check the clutch slave cylinder to see if its wet then replace it and bleed the clutch. (only about 25 bucks for a replacement slave) so for now try adding more tranny fluid until you can get the fixed. If that's the problem that is

Well it could be a few things. Could be the clutch, binding cable, Trans internals. Since I have the same problem and havent found it yet (clutch replaced 2years ago, slave and master) I would have to say its internal. Inside the trans there are sinc discs. These help to match up gears when shifting. If they get worn out your gears dont lineup properly. There is a rebuild kit somewhere but its not easy to do and requires special tools as far as I know. Never rebuild a manual trans myself. You might want to take it to a trans shop and get it looked at but do your own research on which shop is the best.

when the car engine is turned off, it shifts perfectly smoothly fine. but when i actually drive on the street, it gets kinda hard to put into 1st or 2nd gear.

sometimes, like at a light when im stopped. i'll try to put it into 1st and it wont go, so i just put it in second then straight up to first and it goes right in.

maybe this might help?
worth a shot.

First gear is always like that. Its normal. Not supposed to happen in second gear. I think you have worn out 2nd gear synchros.

idk... goodluck

If it only does it with the car on, sounds like something hydraulic, see if your slave or clutch master cylinders are leaking first.

ya my 2 cents is the synchros or shifter bushings. Synchros are prown to fail in ludes. especially 5th gens. Hope you can figure it out and fix the problem.
