Default Vibration @ Idle... I've tried many things

92 Prelude auto Si. Even though this is just my "going to work" car, I don't mind spending money on it. There is this very bad vibration (shakes the whole interior) when the car is idling (doesn't matter if I'm in P or D or R). Once the car moves or the RPM goes above 1000, it goes away. I've tried many things such as...

1. Replaced all engine mounts. There were 2 mounts (front and left side) broken, but that didn't fix the problem.

2. Played with the idle adjustment. I actually replace the idle control valve and the fast idle valve. I even remove the top half of the intake manifold to clean.

3. Replaced all spark plugs and wires, and even the whole distributor. I had to because the distributor bearing was going bad anyway.

I keep going back to the idle, because if I adjust the idle higher, the vibration is not as bad. However by that time, the car is idling way too high. Call me stupid, because I actually not too sure how to read the tach. below 1000 RPM. It goes 0 RPM then 2 lines then 1000 RPM. If I'm on the first line, what RPM am I at?

So people please please help me out!!

Def sounds like your rear mount is the culprit.

I replaced the rear mount already. I replace it with a genuine Honda part.

Thats a low idol. Its like 333 rpm. Thats probally your problem, you should be sitting on the second line at least.

I see I see... okay I go adjust it tomorrow and see what happens. The manual calls for 700 + or - 50 RPM if I remember correctly. I will report back.

I adjusted the idle according to the service manual. The vibration is not as bad, but still there. If its in P or N, it is okay. But once I put in D or R, it vibrates.

Now im no expert but that sounds like it has something to do with your transmission. Mabey the mount is bad.

have you changed your timing belt recently? could be that you didn't get your balancer shafts alligned properly? My car vibrates really bad for some reason and I can't figure out why...

clean your iacv, or check it out. it's job to idle up your vehicle upon request. you need the rpm to be highrer. when you start your vehicle bone cold, does it rev up to 1500-2000 area. if not, check iacv

Could be Balancer (shaft) Belt. Its there to reduce vibration.....

There should be a fourm edaquit here where the first question asked is "What have you done so far to correct the problem?"

could your exhaust be loose? When u replaced the motor mounts did you do them all at the same time without driving the car at all. If you do one, than drive with its adjacent mount broken it will break that mount again real fast. I am assuming u did, but just wanna make sure.

My 93 Integra LS automatic has had vibrations in D ever since the day I bought it, in 2005. I've checked out the motor mounts, tightened them, but the problem is still there. I have been told by 2 different mechanics that it is typical of these Hondas/Acuras to vibrate. They said that the transmission "doesn't match the motor"... as if the transmission was either too big or too small for the engine. I really don't understand it, but I thought I'd let you know that this issue seems to be fairly common.

Please let us know if anyone has any more information on it.

Put a vacuum gauge on the manifold. Read the vacuum at idle and off idle. The needle should be steady. If the needle bounces, You have a valve thats not sealing all the way or a tight valve. Also check the exhaust for oxygen. You need a gas analyzer. A shop can do it for you. If you have oxygen in the exhaust, a fuel injector is failing. These can cause idle vibrations. Especially in an older car.

Engine mounts. especially the front one(s) are to be loose initially. engine running. shift into reverse while holding brake then torque it down. Also a bent front subframe could be the cause. Does problem change with A/C on?
