need help registering jdm itr in CA
If anyone here has done it here can you please enlighten me with some detail on how or I could pay you to do it. I know there is certain loop hole you can get the jdm car registered but I dont know it. I tried calling DMV and CHP and they are a no help. I know I dont want to do that Vin swap b.s. If anyone has any info on how I can start to get register please share. I know a good amount of you people here has jdm cars as dd. Please share how you done it.
Go to the DOT and NHTSA websites and download and read the .pdf's on registering out-of-country vehicles.
Be prepared to find a Registered Importer near you.
Be prepared to have your car sit in limbo for up to a year.
Be prepared to spend near $10,000 for DOT/NHTSA retrofits and labor. (process can only be done legally at a Registerd Importer).
You must have all proper importation documents from Japan. This includes proper shipping manafests from port of departure and port of arrival. As well as all the US Customs paperwork.
Or you can VIN swap and risk getting charged with a federal crime, a 6 figure fine, and/or months in prison.
Or you can drive around an illegal car and risk loosing the car and having it crushed. Proof of purchase no longer binds you to your car if it isn't registered with the DOT, as of 4/06 any vehicle not approved for road use by the DOT can be impounded and destroyed at the owners expense.
Or you can purchase a USDM ITR, spend less money, less time and headache, purchase a JDM front end, and be just as happy. RHD sucks in drive-thru's anyways.
