Default Anyone know how to CHANGE PISTON RINGS??

I just had to change my entire catback because it was clogged. The mechanic said that I am burning oil but there is no smoke blowing out of the new exhaust. I am using 5w30 Synthetic Mobile 1 Motor Oil in my 1995 LS Vtec. Stock pistons and stock rods in the block.

If it is bad piston rings can anyone tell me how to replace them? The more detailed the better! Thanks guys appreciate it.

take your motor out. then take the head off the block. then take the block apart. either hone it yourself or take it to a machine shop. best bet is let the machine do it. they will hone, deck and hot tank it for u. if u don't know what ur doing don't even try it.

When you say LS VTEC do you mean you swapped a GSR or you did an LSV. Or you didn't mean to put that?

So did your "mechanic" diagnose this clog in your catback?

And I'm sure he wanted to change your rings while he was at it also.

haha actually
i was driving and the car wouldn't go pass 4,000 rpm
It would bog and get stuck but when i took it to the mechanic he said it was a clogged exhaust system and when he removed the connection from the headers to the cat, i tried it out [Loud as hell] it did hit vtec and pass 4,000 rpm.

He said the clog was from burning oil. I changed the oil about 1,000 miles ago and had to add 2 quarts within about 5 days of driving it.

To the other guy
When i say it is LS Vtec [ b18b block w/ b16 head]

Anyone know about how much it would cost to take it to the shop?
Anyone have a detailed DIY information?

2 qts in 5 days is a problem. I would suggest checking for leaks as well though. It could be your valve seals as well or a few other things....but probably not if its that much oil. You probably wont find a great how-to, but you can check out c-speedracing.com if you'd like....however thats one of those things either you are confident in doing or you arent....and really the helms is the best how-to.

10 year old car with 54k on it? Thats some low mileage, is that carfax verified? If its not leaking anywhere, then its gotta be burning off....however the higher gears is probably just running a bit rich and not oil burning...assuming its black smoke and not white.

I bought my 97 gsr 2 years ago with 34k miles, it didn't burn a drop of oil till i started modding it. Now it burns about a quart a month, and thats after the rebuild with fresh rings and a hone.

umm why did you rebuild the motor with that few miles on it?

My car has 258K on the original engine w/ all original internals, and it goes through MAYBE 1/2 quart in 3000 miles (normal amount of oil loss w/ VTEC use I think).

anyone have any tips or insight on fixing piston rings?

How much does a shop charge? Is it better to upgrade pistons and shot peen rods?

of course its better. depending on what piston u use. p73 or p30 would be a good start. u can even use pct if u want a really high compression. shot peen would make ur stocok rods even stronger then they already are. althought some will say stock ls rods come shot peened already. but for me if my rods are being resized for o/s p73 i would just pay the extra 50-60 bucks fro insurance.
