Default New owner of a 1988 EF Sedan

Well guys i went out tonight and bought my now 6th car that i have owned and it is again in the honda family. My gf has a 1997 LX civic with 152K on it, and i just bought a 1988 DX sedan with 147K on it.

It was org bought in AZ and was driven there for 3/4 its life. It was brought to IL in 2001, and then Madison in 2003, and has spent its life here.

Questions i have:
1. How can i squeeze a few more miles per gallon out of this car ?
2. Can you do an aftermarket cruise control on it ? or fit an Acura/honda on onto it.

Check for updates:

actualy is in you integra! do a search in the ef section for integra console.

i have heard scarry things about aftermarket cruise control, sticking throttle when trying to shut it off, need i say more.

and for mpg do a tune up, filter, cap/rotor, plugs and wires ect. and maybe an new o2, check your tire pressure.

Yeah i did see that the integra middle will fit into the EF, with some seat belt mods... sometimes. But i dont think they made a blue center, or i mean had blue dash in an integra.

But the muffler is sure sounding like there is a hole in it, it deff does not sound like it should.

Any suggestion on a new exhust system ? I could go and try to find one at a junk yard, or get one from middas, or buy a nice one that will last for a long time but not cost me 1/2 the amount i just paid for it.

Well i killed it this morning. I forgot to turn off the parking lights as i went into work this morning and when i came out for lunch the battery was dead. Im just used to my audi where it would turn off when the car was shut off, or at least in my GF civic if you open the door there is a beep to turn them off.

Well anyway, i do have questions. Im getting the "honda shake" which im guessing is part to the exhaust system taht i think has never been changed. the pipe is very black and falling apart. My question is where can i get a exhaust system for my 88 Sedan DX ? I have looked around the internet and at company websites and they are all for the CRX's.

What kind of exhaust set ups do other members with the same car have ?

do a search, it is very easy to put a buzzer in, here is a link that will help you.

No companies make full exhaust systems for the sedan to my knowlege. I'd suggest going to your local exhaust shop and ask for an estimate to fix your exhaust leak. They could probably fab you a mandril bent custom catback for 2-300 bucks and free up a little power. Or they can just shut it up for much cheaper. Good luck and do a auto2manual swap already!

Go to your local muffler shop. That will be the least expensive route to go for exhaust.

I know that i want to have some better air flow into the engine. Im wondering if i should do just a K&N air filter in the stock filter or should i do a K&N full air intake ?

And what do people recomend on batterys ? Brand name, (keeping in in the same location or moving it in back)

Here are some new pictures of the Phillips Light i did and amber bulb corner lights. I also used Black magic to try to get my bumpers back to black ( this may take a few coats. I put one on already).

I also wanna get bulbs to have my tail light red (turn signals) but i couldnt find them at Farm and Fleet.

New head lights. They are a huge difference

Here they are up close. You can see the amber bulbs help make it look not so ulgy anymore for my corner lights.

HEres my back bumper with the applied Black magic.

What do you think ?

1.)Cup Holder- https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1536242

I just put my drink in between the seat and e-brake. Ghetto, but it works.

2.)Arm Rest- https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1544601

3.)More MPG- You can get your ECU chipped to modify your fuel maps. Intake's are said to improve MPG too, but I didn't notice any difference. Or just drive slower and switch gears early.

4.)Cruise Control- http://www.geocities.com/tjcivic/cruise.html

you can buy a hatch back cat back and just get a muffler shop to lengthen the tail pipe.. or do what everyone said and get a new one made up. replace that ugly fender.

want more mpg convert to mpfi

you can paint your tail lights using a product called metalcast.. doesnt look or sound like it works on plastic but it does very well.. and its not that dull heres mine with it painted.

Just get the drop in filter or an Ebay intake with a K&N cone filter. Not much difference between the two, esp. with your engine.

Batteries? I always liked the Optima batteries, but they are 2x as expensive as something you'd get from Sears, etc. No need to move it to the back unless you're trying to tidy up your engine bay or are planning on tracking the car.

BTW, is that a big old rusty trailer hitch sticking out the back of that thing?

Yes that is a ball hitch ( i can just put a ball on it and carry our trailers we have at our shop but i do need connectors for lights) not a hitch to put any bike rack into which i wish it was. Im thinking of replacing it, just so i can get a 1.25" hitch so i can carry a bike rack on the back.

Well guys and girls i took in my car today to have things checked out and it looks like im going to need some help finding some parts and so forth.

There is a big list of fixes and a small list of whats good on the car. Ill start out with the bad stuff.

1. Spark plugs are Champion when they should be Ngk or boshe.
2. Need new spark plug wires, and Valve cap is worn with leaking oil into spark plug area.
3. Radiator fins are crumbling. 1/3 is missing, and 1/2 is blocked with mud and dirt
4. Need new battery - failed its test to start up
5. Need exhaust, from cat back. muffler rattles as does res pipe.
6. Rear breakes are paper thin and cracked. Needs hardware.

So yeah. Im sure people will tell me to search and check E-bay and junk yards for parts, which i have checked our salvage yards and found nothing. Are there companies out there that are better than others for parts ?

The good list:
1. front breakes
2. 4 new tires
3. new air filter
4. underside not rusty at all. Pretty solid yet

are any companys better? ya, honda, but you pay for it.

heres a link for an online junkyard site, they have lots of parts
http://www.car-part.com/

also at the top of the ef forum page there's links to cheap honda part and sources, and where can i buy..... section.

good luck, dont let it discourage you

one thing I guess you dont "NEED" right away is the cat back, that can wait

i boought a brand new mid pipe for my car(stock) 2 years ago and the resonator made noise a year later.. so dont buy stock . get something nice. also make sure its just the valve cover gasket that leaking oil into the tubes cuz a common thing to go is the rocker assembly o ring which is located at the bottom of the tube. iv had two engines with oil leaks into the tubes and it was becuase of this o ring and not the VC gasket.

all and all everything bad listed is easy to fix yourself. but i wouldt do the rear brakes.. i hate drums for some reason. too complicated and that spring pisses me off.
