Powder Coating lug nuts -searched
I have JDM ITR in champ white and i've been looking for a red of red lug nuts. All the aftermarket lug nuts like rays, works, etc have tapered ends and shoudln't be used for my wheels. I'm thinking about powder coating my oem lug nuts/locks.
What are the ups and downs? I've called a couple places and I've been quoted 85-100.

Sounds like 85-100 reasons against.

i mean compared to rays for $140. it's not too bad. Plus i'm using it on ITR wheels, which have the OEM ball seating. I can't use aftermarket lugs.
would the powder coat come off easily when i'm torquing down the lugs?

Wow 85 to 100 bucks to powdercoat lug nuts. That is overly expensive. Powdercoat can take abuse but I think after removing them a couple times the powdercoat will crack. And if you dont have a clear coat of powder on them, when you scratch it, it will turn black. I wouldn't pay more than $50. Just because I know how to powdercoat. A real good person can do it in about 1/2 hour. Maybe less.
its your car man and if you can afford it and want red nuts then do it. at least youll be the only one with red lugs doing it correctly on OEM wheels

Many, many people run the tapered style nuts on OEM acorn holed wheels. I have done it for many years with no problems. Just make sure you get the wheel on there straight and you should not have any issues.

Many people do meth as well, that doesn't mean it's a good idea.
Get the right nuts for the right wheel. Why take a chance when lug nuts are $1/each.

I am getting my stock Ap1 wheels powdercoated. I need to find some lug nuts that will fit the OEM Honda wheels. There must be somebody that makes an aftermarket colored lugnut with the "acorn" type seat.
There are colored OEM-style lugnuts available on ebay for a lot less than 85-100$.
Do NOT use tuner lugnuts on OEM wheels, very dangerous, take it from someone who's worked in the business.

Absolutely WRONG and UNSAFE. With the proper shaped lug nuts (i.e. same shaped seating area as the wheel), they hold the wheel on across the entire seating area. With the wrong shaped lug nuts, they only hold the wheel on around a line (a circle, actually). That circle is subjected to all the forces acting on the wheel, and it doesn't take long before the circle (usually the lug nut rather than the wheel) starts to wear down. The lug nuts loosen, and the next thing you know, you bend or snap a stud/lug and maybe lose a wheel.
If you haven't had this happen, then you've just been lucky. I've seen quite a few people who had problems as a result. And I'm not even in the business.
This is BAD ADVICE. Don't be a fool. Get the proper shaped lug nuts for your wheels - conical/tapered for aftermarket wheels, ball/spherical/radius for Honda/Acura wheels.

Make sure they have the ball (spherical, radial) shaped seat. Be careful with the term "acorn"; a lot of the time that term is used for lug nuts which are about as long as they are wide, regardless of the shape of the seating area.
If you want black gloss lug nuts with the ball-shaped seat, look in the FAQ topic at the top of this forum and it will tell you the part number you can use to get them from any Acura dealer.
