Default starter compatability?

I have a 89 Civic Si and need a starter for it. I want a cheap fix so I'm going to find a used OEM starter. Will any 88-91 d-series starter work or does it have to be a Si 1.6L starter? All the starter from these year all the same?

Sorry I dont have a direct answer, junk yards have books with that info, I always carry my old part to the junk yard to double check it here in Japan, they dont have these books on hand. Go to the new parts store and ask to see both side by side comparison, and then buy some good smelly stuff for the car.

Had the same issue last week. Starter crapped out. Tried to put a starter from 92-95, but it does not line up. Any 89-91 D series starter should work.

Would the starter matter if its from a manual or automatic car?

1) is there a difference between D series cable vs hydro starter?
2) is there a difference between auto and manual starter?

One of the greatest links I ever came across is this:
http://www.mypartshop.com/
A junk yard friend gave it to me. Fill in the left side only. It will cross over what you have and give you the closest yard that subscribes to it and their distance, phone, etc.
Most yards use the Hollander system.

All 88-91 *Should* be the same. I had 88 DX's and a 88 STD, and the starters bolted fine to a DOHC ZC transmission(90-91).
