timing belt help
hi, i have a b18c5 and i was changing the timing belt and was having some issues. when ever i put the timing belt on it ends up moving just a little. first i lined up the crank with the tdc mark and then the cam gears with their marks then put the belt on. after i turn the motor three teeth, i tighten the tennstioner and rotate the motor six times, and it ends up being a little off everytime. any help would be very helpful, thanks.

is the tensioner loose (free of any tension)? also, if you get someone to help you, it'll make things alot easier as far as sliding the belt back on.

Then loosen the tensioner, slide the belt off the cams, reposition the cams manually pushing them while the crank is at TDC, slide the belt on the cams, then tighten the tensioner and try again. This should fix it, it did for me a couple of times...

step by step.. and don't put on any pulley till i tell you too!!
put the belt on the crank first...
keep a lil tension on both sides of the belt with your hands(so it doesn't skip) and slide left hand (exhaust side) up belt to meet cam pulley
make sure cam pulley is where you want it (you may have to finesse it with a wrench on the 12mm at the end to get it perfectly lined up with belt teeth and the top of the head ,respectively)
don't let go of the belt with that right hand
place clothes pin over belt and exhaust cam pulley so it doesn't skip (makes it easier and one less headache)
don't let go of belt with that right hand.. its keeping the belt in the pulley teeth because if it skips you have to start all over again
feed left hand up belt from exhaust to intake cam
get them lined up on the intake cam pulley like the exhaust
another clothespin
don't let go with right hand and don't worry if the crank spins a lil.. we'll get the slack out the belt later. JUST MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T SKIP A TOOTH OR YOU START OVER
now with left hand feed the belt over the water pump
now feed it onto the tens (much easier if you make it open all the way up, loose)
now slowly let the tensioner take slack from between the water pump and itself, then from the crank to itself.. MAKE SURE CRANK SPINS WITH BELT IF IT NEEDS TO, JUST DON'T SKIP A TOOTH BITCH!! or you'll have to start all over
by now the tensioner should be doing its job... and the slack is gone from both sides of the belt. tighten the tens down now
you may have a lil at the top between cams.. which is normal, just a slight bend in the belt between cams, not a perfect straight line
now crank the engine from the pulley by hand a few times to double check
engine should be in time and belt should be perfectly tens (not TIGHT, but def not loose either)
go out an burn some rubber
