b16 tranny problems
ok my friend has a b16 swap in his eg out of a 99 si. He was driving it the other day and he said everytime he would let his foot off the clutch pedal it would pop, he continued to drive it and about 30 minutes later he came to a stop went to put it in gear and when he released the clutch it started making a loud popping noise and would not move. he had it towed to my house we have removed the tranny and inspected the flywheel and clutch for wear, they both looked good. We have opened the tranny up and the bearings on top of the gear sets all look and feel good, as does the one on the diff. Does anyone know what bearing would cause the symptoms I described? The gear sets are still installed in the transmission, so I have not accessed the bearings on the bottom of the gearsets. Any ideas?
Disassemble and check out the diff. Sounds like when I shattered mine like a month ago. Has he been rodding it at all? Any wheel hop? That's the most likely culprit with mine. Also, you'll probably want to upgrade the diff bearings to enclosed (if you haven't already) instead of the angled rollers for stability and durability, but that's just my opinion.
yeah he drives it hard a lot, I was thinking it was the diff as well. opened up the tranny and found that it is enclosed bearings on the diff. does anyone know when honda started putting these in the tranny's? I am wondering if someone had rebuilt this tranny before. Thanks in advance.
