Default Smells Fishy?

Hi folks! I have a 1988 CRX SI with a little above 160k, completely stock (to my knowledge). I just got my CRX back from my mechanic for replacing my alternator and front axle when I notice that I smell fumes IN THE CAR. I do have one of those sound amplifier on my stock exhaust pipe (came with the car, unfortunately) but I doubt that would be it. The oil pan isn't leaking and there are no visible smoke, but I do need to replace my oxygen sensor soon. Other than that, I have no idea where the smell is coming from and the smell is pretty much there from the start of the engine until it turns off. Any ideas?

Also, my friend has a 91 CRX stock and when he shifts gear, it drops 3k to 4k rpm for every shift. But when I shift my CRX, it only goes down 1k rpm per shift. Any clue why?

Thanks again!

do you both have SI's? same size wheel/tire combo? shifting at the same given RPM?

sorry... can't help you with the 'fishy' smell.

The si has a close ratio tranny a dx or cx has longer gears,
thats why your rpms don't drop that much.

i wouldnt call an SI trans 'close ratio'. it's got longer gears than an LS trans.

An axle boot leaking the lubrication
on the exhaust can smell pretty funky..

The new axle might be leaking or the mechanic may have gotten
some of the grease on the exhaust when remacing the axle..

Unless you bought the CRX new, maybe the previous owner blew the tranny out and they replaced it or rebuilt it with dx internals, it happens.

as for the fishy smell, tell your girl to shower.

j/k

Hmm. It smells more like fumes (carbon monoxide) and it's really making me sick when I drive now :/. I think there is a leak in the exhaust; I did plan to change out the piping completely, but I'm waiting for my next check for that one. As for the rpm, my friend's car is also a SI. I wouldn't even know if the tranny was rebuilt; my friend pretty much just gave me the car without any info on it. I wouldn't be surprised though.
