Noob brake question
I hate drum brakes. It took a good 45 minutes just to get the drum off my girlfriend's 89 Si. Then we disassembled the old shoes and can't reinstall the new ones.
I don't know which springs go on first. Do you install all the springs off the hub and then connect it or clip each onto the hub and then install the springs?
Anyone have a walkthrough for this?

Exactly, the Honda drums are all the same concept.
Exactly, the Honda drums are all the same concept.
Here you go, CRX BRAKE DRUM REASSEMBLE
-Apply grease to sliding surface of pivot pin and insert into brake shoe.
-Install parking brake lever and wave washer on pivot pin and secure with U-clip
-Pinch U-clip securly so pivot pin doesn't come out
-Connect parking brake cable to parking brake level
-Apply grease to each sliding suface of brake backing plate
-Don't get it on the shoes themselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Turn the adjuster bolt to shoten the clevis
-Hook the adjuster spring to adjuster level FIRST!!! Then to brake shoe
-Install the adjuster bolt/clevis assembly and the upper return spring
-Install the shoes to the backing plate
-Install the lower return spring, the tension pins, and retaining springs
-Turn the adjuster bolt to force the brake shoes out until brake drum will not easliy go on. back off the adjuster bot just enough that the brake drum will go on and turn easily.
-Depress the brake pedal several times so set the self-adjusting brake.
-Adjust parking brake if needed.

Not sure why it took so long to remove the drums. There are 2 holes for you to thread 2 metric bolts in and that forces the drums to come out. Even if they are stuck on there. Hope you didn't have the E-Brake up
Do your girlfriend a favor, Replace those wheel cylinders if they are original even if they are not leaking. They are like 12-15 bucks each.
Here is why,
I was in my crx letting it warm up and i pressed on the brakes, let the ebrake down, and put car in 1st gear and took off. Less than 6 houses down there is a stop sign so i only reached about 20mph. Well i went to slow down and my pedal sank to the floor. Scariest thing to happen to me so far. Luckily its not a busy intersection!! Car came to a stop eventually and i reversed up my street. Parked the car and noticed fluid behind my right rear wheel. Got the car up and drum off to find wheel cylinder exploded inside the drum, cylinder metal was cracked and spring came out. If i was getting off the highway i would have died
All for a 15 buck wheel cylinder, so i guess i got lucky. Next day i did my wheel cylinders and shoes. So moral, while you are there replace cylinders..2 bolts and a 10mm brake line wrench

this is the first drum brake thread i have seen on this website....i always thought the si came with discs in the back stock.....but since you don't have them...you may consider finding some trail arms from a teggy and just do a swap...they bolt right up and most times you just have to upgrade the rotors and pads...at least thats all i had to do for my rear disc swap....if you look around you could probably find a how to thread on how to do it....
i mean i know its your girls car so.....i wouldn't be mad at ya for ignoring this lol...
