Default 4.44 gears on AP1?

I did search and found nothing so here it goes...

I came up on some 4.44 gears for cheap so i jumped on it and bought them. Usually with ap1's people go 4.56 or 4.77 and 4.44 are usually run on AP2's, from what i've found. These are a little more aggresive then stock so do you think I would see enough difference to justify the installing these?

I found the 4.44s took about 1/2 second off the quarter mile. Good way to go.

both kia and mazda came out with the 4.44 gears. Motorklasse uses the mazda gear. I have the 4.56R gear made by Richmond Gear, they do a lot of American car gears, but are much stronger than the OEM mazda and kia gears. I'd recommend them, but if you do a lot of highway driving, I would recommend the 4.44 gears, although they would probably be just a little bit lower than the 4.44, I personally love the 4.56 and had they cryo-treated, just so I have some peace of mind. These will give you an amazing jump in performance, you can def. tell the difference when you first drive it. In traffic you no longer have to feather your clutch in stop in go, you can just stay in first gear or even second. The acceleration is dreastically improved and will provide you with better accel out of turns. Your rev when switching gears also doesn't drop as much as they do on the stock gears. Hope that helps you out.

there... that should give you an idea at what 4.56's should be at since it def wont be higher than the 4.77's... as for gas people say that it isnt too big of a decrease... if ur asking the question than maybe u shouldnt get it... any mod usually decreases gas mileage... just get them and dont worry about it...

also heres another vid... 4.56 vs stock... sorry i got the one with french people... its the only one i could find...

hope this helps

I got my 4.56 from Hardtop Guy. He's based out of Ohio. I had them cryo-treated. at 75, I'm at 5k RPM, thats what I normally cruise at, so it kills my gas. I now cruise at 65, which is 4.5k RPM. Which helps out on gas, but city driving and being stuck in traffic I actually had better milage. I don't know what model mazda and kia, but yes they are a direct swap. Although they don't undergo any treatment to strengthen them, so I'd go through HTG or Motorclasse to get the gears. LMK if you have any other questions.

BTW if you have a AP2, your RPM will be different b/c it has a higher final drive, which would make the AP2 having 4.44 gears almost the same as a AP1 having 4.56 gears. But the good thing about the AP2 tranny it has a longer 6th gear, for crusing on the freeway. Hope that helps you guys out.

I have a ap1 and i thought the ap2 had a 4.10 final drive?? I thought the only difference was that the 1,2,3 gears were shorter I geuss I was wrong.

And the reason I am asking about the models is because I have access to a salvage yard where I can get stuff for really cheap plus I have an extra ap1 diff so I was thinking If I could find out what models haave the 4.44 gears I would get them put it in my spare diff and just swap them around so if I didnt like it I could go back to stock. Plus it would save me time not having to tear into my origial diff a bunch of times you know.

The rear assembly final drive for AP1 and AP2 is 4.10:1.

Other than Richmond's 4.56, the rest are made by Mazda for the Miata and others. The Kia gear has a Mazda part number on it. The availability can be found in this thread on Miata drivetrain interchange.http://members.aol.com/solomiata/Drivetrain.html

I've had all of the gears except the 4.65 and the 4.77 in my car (some in my AP1 and others in my AP2). I have driven the 4.77 that was in my student's car at Gingerman Raceway. Don't like it. It runs out of gear exiting the turns and had extra shifts on the straights.

In my view, the 4.56 is the right gear for the AP1 and the 4.44 for the AP2. I now have an AP2 and pulled the 4.56 in favor of the 4.44 and I'm very satisfied

I bought the gears from Motorklasse, the balance of the rear assembly from HardtopGuy and HardtopGuy did the build for me. Very satisfied with both vendors. They are good folks.

is it ricks or richmond that makes the 4.56 gear? i know ricks s2k has the 4.56 but didnt know that richmond does.
do u have a link for the richmond? wonder if it can be ordered through summit or jegs.

so pretty much with the 4.56 ratio, its just like my old ef b16 hatch on the freeway. not bad just gets annoying on slightly longer trips.

motorklasse sells gears but not sure if they sell the 4.56 they may only sell 4.44 and 4.77 but don't quote me on that. Motorklasse along with Ricks are site vendors for s2ki so you shouldn't have to worry about any shady businesss

how is the quality with the Motorklasse gear? its ALOT cheaper. i know you get what you pay for but if u dont plan on hard launching or drag racing. would it be fine for the corners and playing around on the back roads?

I have the Motorklasse 4.44 gearset in my car. It's first-class in my view.

Send an email to Greg at GT Motoring. He'll be right on it for you.
