Default 1-2 shift question

wassup

ill make this short. When racing our type r's, the tires will screech at the 1-2 shift. I never get the screeching. All i get is some madass wheelhop in between shifts?

Anyone know the reason? is it me or the car...
Thanx

That's impossible. Your getting wheel hop in neutral (clutch in).

I get screeching during 2-3 shifts as well as 1-2 shifts.

Lol..someone must not have good tires. The faster you shift the less of a chance you are going to"screetch"the tires.A good ,fast power shift won't even break the tires loose. It should be seemless.

Only if I could shift like I did in the R in my new car.

Im sure that I could break the tires loose on the 1-2 shift, but why would you what to? I thought the idea was to get as much power to the ground as possible and my understanding is that wheelspin=loss of power to the ground for that time period. I try to make my 1-2 shift as fast and seemless as possible with just the right amout of that great yank (<--- Technical term) forward. Every once in a while ill mess up and get a little wheel spin, but not much, just a mini squeek.

Tires.

I just swapped on some near new stock rubber last week. Compared to the old wasted ones which used to hop and then grip way back when new, over time with mileage they just started to spin regardless of conditions. Of course traction is a bit more of an issue with my car compared to stock.

With the newer tires, I get the hop again and ALOT better grip. It's controllable, and it hunts if the launch is too aggressive but nice easy starts work well.

Wanna cure the hop? Heres a few things to try;

1. Better clutch control/launching technique

2. Tire pressure/ find the balance, too high and it will just spin, too low and it could spin on the rim and or just give poor cornering characterisitcs and roll over. In the middle is Just Right...

3. Stiffer Motor mounts, like Mugen

4. Z10 radius arms

Good luck,

A.

Perhaps also:

5 - Higher spring rates for front springs.

[EDIT]
You might also want to take a look at the Best Motoring videos as well. I learned a lot about shift/clutch technique, especially smooth shifting, from them

Is that right? I would've thought softer springs would give better traction...

I thought stiffening the front would reduce wheel hop... please correct me if I am wrong!! Hate it when that happens!

I try NOT to have the wheels slip (I'll leave it for the drag queens) j/k. Smooth, quick shifting should somewhat limit this. As for your problems...what tires are you running? Tires and shifting should be the first place to look into for what your talking about.

it depends on how hard i shift, , , ,if i shift really hard i get wheel hop all the way up to 4th gear .
and lighter shifts they just squell and spin up to 4th.

Dumping the clutch at 7K on street tires, I'll probably break both axles and intermediate shaft from wheel hop

As long as your clutch is 1/2 way decent, the tires should spin on the 1-2 shift, and chirp on the 2-3 shift, and soemtimes on the 3-4 shift. With most aftermarklet clutches, you'll get up the chirp up to the 3-4 shift.

To chirp tires, shift AT redline. Don't let RPMs drop too much in between shifts. if U really don't care about your tranny, powershift it (banging gears without letting go of the gas). Good luck.
