Its most commonly the Input shaft bearing that would make it rattle like that when the clutch is up when in no gear.

are you planning on doing mods and what not, turbo etc. If so mind as well upgrade the clutch.

Depends what it is. If its the Throwout bearing, its relatively cheap to get one, but unless you install it yourself, or have a knowledgable friend do it, your going to pay lots in labor fees at a shop, becuase it involves removing the tranny to get to it, which is a several hour (or more) job, depending how fast they work.
If its your Input Shaft bearing, then your eventually going to have to have it replaced (bearing inside tranny) by a shop or just replace the tranny altogather with a used one. Either way, unless you do the work yourself, its going to be expensive if it goes to a shop.

i think alldata has it for 6 hours. its really a 30 minute job and its pretty much a flat fee we used to charge 85/hour then 6 for RR of tranny
btw that is NOT the mecnanic getting all that. the mechanic sees 10 bucks an hour to 20
20 if you're a master tech soooooooooooo we're NOT crooks!

If u go with a ebay clutch i stand strong with xtd....i have a stage 3 in my b16 a year and it holds up great. i run it hard everyday. Most of the xtd kits come with a lighten flywheel, if u want the car to be a daily driver then DON'T get a lighter flywheel it alot harder to get moving from a stop. thats clutch wise
Imput shaft bearing wise..... go to the honda dealer and get a price on the imput bearing...there not cheap! i just took apart my tranny and the bearing was trashed. Lucky for me i had another tranny case and i switched out the parts in it i know the bearing is good in it i used it once before. trannys aren't hard to figure out. get a manaul off the net http://spoonhonda.com/downloads.htm and look at the pics. of couse u will have to take the case some where to have the bearing pressed in.
problem fixed
but if u do get a new clutch either take off the case and look at the immput shaft bearing or take the tranny out of the car and take it somewhere to have it looked at. theres no reason to change a clutch and put it all back together to find out the noise is still there, all becuz u didn't have someone look at the tranny. i hope my info helps

im willing to bet it isnt the throwout bearing, clutch or anything like that. Its definatly the input shaft bearing. Very common for these to go out on honda transmissions. Diagnostic
If the noise only happens when you press the clutch in (engaged) then its clutch related. (throw out bearing or what have you)
If the noise is there all the ******* time driving you nuts untill you press clutch in then its in your transmission (the good old input shaft bearing). The clutch stops the transmission from spinning, think about it.
Research it. To all the people automatically saying clutch
Nothing worse then taking it all apart, dumping money into the wrong part, putting it back together and finding out its still all fucked up. Take my word on it.
Also to the OP do you notice almost like a whining noise or in a more worse case kinda like a dry bearing noise while driving. Especially when accelerating or down shifting?

Replacing the clutch on my '98 Y8 was a big waste of time. Should have just gone straight for the ISB. I had some people telling me back then that it was a throw out bearing too. Brought it to a couple of certified Honda technician and they diagnosed it as being the input shaft bearing for sure.
It makes a chatter when idling and when I press the clutch in the sound goes away. Sometimes (as of lately) when it's in first, it's began to make almost a zipper like sound when I'm accelerating. Have a replacement transmission we put together, but the snap ring won't seat so I'm stuck for now.

Either way you look at it, its going to have to come off the motor, no matter whats getting repaired or replaced. I would start saving some cash.
