Default CARB components. Time for smog.

This should be an excellent question about C.A.R.B components. So lets say you’re a proud owner of a EF. Now it might be a CRX, Hatchback, or Sedan nobody cares. Now you have a intake manifold, or even as simple as a intake from AEM. Now the intake has been carb approved, but it’s for a 98 civic, not a 88-91 EF. Will the ref still pass your car, because the part is “newer and carb approved” or not?

the reason i ask it's time for smog and i don't have my stock air box, and my buddy has a AEM intake made for a 96-99 civic. I have a 89 sedan. i don't know if they just check visually for carb numbers or actually put them in a system.

You have homework to do!

Go to the manufactures web site and find out what cars are covered by the CARB number. It may also apply to yours.

You can also go to the state CARB web site and do a search on the EO number.

The law is that the part has to have an EO number for the engine!

As an example; I got my 95 B18C motor swap through the referee process and have the applied sticker. After getting it bar'd, I put on a AEM short ram intake tube that has a carb sticker on it. The problem is that if anybody did a search on that number, they would find that it's for the original car and not the B18C. So, technically it's illegal.

The smog check guy that I go to doesn't bat an eye at it and I doubt a cop would either. A smog Referee would check the number and what it applies to and then throw me out the door!!!!
