Default Loud exhaust is killing me!

I have a 3" all the way back with a 24" resonator and magnaflow muff. its not that loud from the outside of my del sol but inside is killer. The drone is just driving me mad. Here's the wierd thing, when I drive with the top off, its not that bad. When the top is on the inside of the car is like a speaker box.

So I tried sticking my head in the trunk and you can def. hear the loud "bass" from the exhaust resonating. what have you all done to stop the droning.

I've searched and found just a bunch of threads saying put on a resonator.

That's the same setup I have. The resonator helps keep a certain tone and quiets it just a little, but it's still drony on the highway. Nothing to do but restrict the exhaust more by adding a muffler.

In your case you might have to swap from the magnaflo straight-though to a 3" baffled muffler. IIRC Apex'i has a 3" World Sport II muffler. I know my 2.5" WS2 was very quiet on an NA b18.

See if you can press different areas of the car to suppress the frequency. Using some sound deadening in key areas could make a big difference. I'd try that before going with more exhaust and the power loss that'll go with it.

You don't know droning...I'm on a 3" open dp with a ball bearing turbo...sh*t sounds like an N/A car almost. I'm gonna hold off til next year for an exhaust, but your setup was what I was going with. Can you post a pic of it on your Sol?

resonator is the best bet if you don't want to loose too much power.

this is going to be an expensive exhaust! hahaha i was thinking about running 2 mufflers. but i'm running 20 psi at 416 whp. I'm not sure if going to a chambered muff will work too well. I tried using rubberized undercoating on the bottom of the spare wheel well (inside and out) to see if it would deaden some sound, didn't work. seems like a chambered muffler might be the best way to go.

usually its a bad thing if you are shooting flames out your exhaust, unless you have a rotary or are utilizing a 2-step. which you arent.

bump for a solution! I really don't want to restrict my exhaust if i don't have too. I even thought about the 2.5" twinloops.

I would suggest some sound deadening. I had a WS2 on my Civic and even that was driving me nuts. The exhaust note itself is fairly quiet but the sound would just resonate in my hatch. I dynamatted the whole floor and it made a huge difference.

Someone posted earlier to get a better muffler and get an e-cutout. That sounds like a winner to me. If I were to go back to boost, I'd keep my stock exhaust system and get an e-cutout. Quiet, yet at the flick of a button I have open header. Win-win.

Besides, modifying cars is never cheap. There's always something.
