Default timing issue

ok so i bought a timing light to check my timing and i followed the steps that i read in other forums on how to fix the timing like jumping the connector and moving the dizzy while light is on pulley. but then i put the light on pully and see the marks and i noticed the marks aint even close to the pointer on the plastic cover i would move the dizzy back and forth and the marks arent even close to the pointer so then what could it be.

Was your car at full operating temperature? Also, I beleive your rpm's should be at ~750.

ok so i put everything like how it says in the haynes manuel to put the cam up with lines straight with side of the head and the pulley mark which is the white mark farthest from the other three alined with the marker on plaastix cover. But what i wanted to know is that i tightened every thing up and put the timing light and started messing with the distribuator moving it back and forth and the white line was perfect on the marker but the other three are still to far is this good or bad
