Distributor O-Ring. Use gasket sealant or not?

I'm going to be putting a new distributor on when it stops raining and was wondering if I should use gasket sealant on the O-ring. Yes, no, maybe so? Thanks!

I've heard of some people doing this. Was just curious if it is mandatory or not.
