Default New owner of a EK Hatch with B18 swap. I have some questions.

Ok, so I just recently bought a hatch that already has a B18C swapped into it. Thing is there are a few things that seem out of place that I would like to fix myself. I'm guessing the previous owner just wanted to swap and go. The mods it has are as listed:

B18C Block / B16A head / '00 Si Transmission
Skunk2 Intake Manifold
JG Edlebrock 65mm Throttle Body
RC 550cc Injectors
AEM Fuel Rail and Regulator
Skunk2 Cam Gears
Short Ram Air Intake w/K&N Filter
MSD Spark Plug Wire Set
DC Sports 4-2-1 Race header w/Test Pipe
A'pexi WS2 Exhaust
P28 OBD1 ECU w/ Hondata S100

As of right now the car seems to run fine except for the speedo not working which leads me to believe that the VSS is dead and V-TEC isn't kicking in. Is this true? V-TEC doesn't work without a speedo?

The car has RC 550cc Injectors. Are these too big? I don't know if the previous owner actually took the time to tune the car. The car smells rich.

I took the plugs out to check them. They all seem fine except the plug on cylinder 1 had a bit of oil in the metal gastet of the plug. Could it be the head gasket taking a crap?

The engine harness is a mess. Crappy splicing and not very neat. Can I swap this out with a 96-98 EX harness? What would I have to change on the EX harness?

Thanks guys for any help. I'm trying to get this car running like a champ!!!

JESUS! 550 cc injectors on that few mods? If the engine was built and turboed i could see it but not with those mods. Does it have huge cams in it? If not, time to go back to 300 somethin or less. I don't think you need to have anything tuned unless you are going to build the motor or put cams in or both.

The Vtec should work with no spedo. It could be the Vtec cylinoid causing it to kick in...or just wired wrong. If I were you I would sell or trade the injectors for some stock ones, and check the gaps in your spark plugs.

vtec has nothing to do with the speedo but more the load on the engine.

1) Go back to a b18c head, the b16 head lowers your compression i.e. lowering your power.

2) The injectors and fuel mods aren't doing jack with a set of cams. Unless they're really aggressive your stock injectors/rail should be sufficient. I bet you don't have resistors wired up and are running rich.

3) MSD wires aren't doing jack, but they aren't hurting you either unless defective. Next time, buy a set of oem equivalent.

4) DC makes a decent header for those on a budget, if you have any n/a goals you need to ditch it though and fork out some serious cash for one that ahs some R&D behind it, not an oem copy.

5) The s100 is some weak ****, get a good tuner and use what he's got. I bet someone local to you has Crome or Crome pro and can install it for free. Tuning will cost a little $$$.

If the engine harness it what is messy, I would definitely swap it out for a good one from Rywire or another reputable harness manufacturer. Much easier than wiring it yourself and worrying about conversion plugs/adapters.

learn, then speak. one of the conditions that must be met before vtec engages is the vehicle must be above ~15mph. no speedo = no vss = no vtec.

if the ecu isnt tuned you're running rich with injectors that big. hondata s100 is more than you'll ever need for an ems if you're not tuning yourself.

...or you can listen to the guy that just learned he is from earth milky way.

You already came to the conclusion you were running rich. You are getting to much fuel put two and two together with the richness and injectors you have....

And the spedo DOES NOT have to be working for vtec to engage. It could just be a problem with the spedo itself due to the swap....i.e, loose or unattached wire. I ran vtec with no working speedo. I have learned from experience, and doing.

the vss HAS to send a signal for the VTEC to work. speed is one of the factors of engagement.

If the speedo problem is from the vss then vtec will not engage, the oil pressure and the vss have to both be at certain signals to engage vtec.
