*&@^#$(;" tranny doesn't want to go back on!
is there any secret to reinstalling the tranny? got my flywheel resurfaced, installed the new clutch & bearings, but i'm having a bitch of a time getting the input shaft to slide into the clutch disc. i know it fits, because i tested it before i did the full install. should i just keep wiggling it until it finally slides on or have someone turn the crank pulley to try & seat the input shaft??
thanks,
eric

" ohhhh, pick the trans up and wiggle wiggle wiggle.
wiggle wiggle wiggle
wiggle wiggle wiggle
pick the trans up and wiggle wiggle wiggle
if that doesn't do it, you won't giggle."
this is being done with the motor in the car, correct? try tilting the engine towards the ground and pick up on the motor from the top, and lift the trans by a jack from underneath. have someone keep an eye on the jack underneath, then do as the song says. don't forget to have fun, a mechanic charges much more to do the same thing.

lol, that's about what i figured - but the motor's actually out of the car - it's being prepped to drop in next weekend...
thanks, i'll try wiggling my **** tomorrow after work!

do you have a clutch alignment tool? without one its gonna be kind of hard, but i'm sure you have one, shouldve came with the clutch kit, good luck wiggling
Try this , ptu the trans in gear and try poping an axle in and rottating, back off the trans a bit and rototate some more or you can try rotating the input shaft a tiny bit and try again, I'll bet its nothing more than getting the splines lined up, then it will slide right in. Its a hell of a lot easier out of the car than in. Ive done it alone with the engine in the car with no transmission jack. No outside assistance.

Very good point I was assuming he bought the corect clutch for his trans. I made sure mine was right before I put the pressure plate one. 88 was different from 89-91
Make sure one more time that the cluth fits your tranny's hub. 88 have 21 splines, 89+ have 20. Got tricked on that once.
actually, it's for the new b16 & the motor is out of the car - i was trying to wiggle it on myself last night, but i'll have help today. hopefully with two of us working it'll be easier to get it back on!

I was having trouble putting my tranny back on too, until I found out that some of the dowel pins were bent. I straightend (spl?) them back out again and it went on perfectly.
So everyone in here is good at changing cluthes. Mine just went out like its fried it wont even engage...Well I can turn the car on....but it has to be in neutral if I try to put it in gear it jsut wont go like the clutch isnt engaged(and this is with the pedal to the floor) okay so I tried putting it in gear and then starting it!!! OOOPPPSS the whole car just shuddered worse then if you tried to go from a stop in 3rd gear. It was bad...so now the car sits jacked up in my garage=day two of burnt clutch.
I have two options= Order an Exedey clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and new flywheel with next day shipping for $258.(including a clutch alignment tool)
Or get it towed to the local tranny shop (its about 20 min. away) and let them have it since I cant be 100% sure what it is. But Im positive they will run me $500 for the usual clutch change(all OEM equipment) and labor....maybe more if Its anything worse.
What would you do?? Keep in mind I work full-time and I drive one of my parents car when I go to work for now, but I doubt they will be very generous if I do it myself could take me a week prob. how long did it take you guys?? J/C since most shops can do it in 2 days max.

you sure it is your clutch....sounds like a problem i was having. wasn't anything to do with the clutch. my pedal cluster was broken. when you push is the clutch pedal does it squeek at all, and is it in line perfectly with the other pedals. like, does it look evenly gapped, or does it look like it is off at an angle? i've never heard of a clutch going out and making that type of problem, get a flash light and look around real good at all the welds where your clutch pedal is hung. if thats it, i'll give you some tips on changing that crap. took me like 6 hours the first time, about 2 hours the second time.(taking out and putting new one in) good luck...
doesnt sound like your clutch at al. It sounds like you broke you clutch cable or somethiing in the path of it to the pedal. Clutch fried would mean your car does not move when in gear and pedal released...........................
Well that could be, It used to kinda make a squeak noise, and somtimes it would disengage earlier than normal almost like it was sticking, well I do know my clutch is pretty much krap becuase it was slipping like crazy espec. the last couple of days. I go look right now, I hope its just somthing like the clutch pedal.....I was out there today looking at it from inside the engine bay the clutch cable looked fine.
I would really like your guy's help on this before I go blow 500 and change at a prof. shop to do somthign easy.

It's not easy, but you can do it with hand tools. You'll need torque wrench, jack + stands, and pry bars. Don't forget to bring a lot of patience.
Well its def. partly the clutch pedal, it sits about 3 inches higher, grinds/squeeks when engaged and I noticed its kinda tilted. I started it this morning in gear and it shuddered but stopped and just ran really loud. and my clutch felt like krap it was all mushy and vibraty like no other.
I called mitchell transmission and they said that its prob. somewhere bewtween the clutch and the pedal, but that I prob. needed a new clutch too. the are towing my car from my house in like a half an hour for free and then they will prob. do the works....should take a few days and break the bank wide open but whatever it will take to get my car running again.

I have a set of bolts i went to the hardware store and bought. They are the same thread as the bolts that thread into the engine block and about 3-4 inches long. I took and cut the head of the bolt off, and cut a slit in the bolts so i could use a flat head screwdriver on it. When i am ready to put the tranny up i will take and screw these bolts into the engine (there are four of them) and then lift the tanny up and just slide them on the bolts. Tranny is aligned first time every time. then just use a flathead screwdriver to pull a bolt out and put a regular bellhousing bolt in.
Easy on from then on.

Well I just got a call from the tranny shop, looks like my pressure plate and throwout bearing are pretty much gone, and I guess my flywheel had some burnt spots on it too, so they are going to change out all that and resurface the flywheel, you know the usual after parts and labor including a free towing of my car from my house in like 15 min. it will be 450.
Only main concern is how bad the input shaft is??? if it isnt as banged up as we hope it wont be then we can leave it, otherwise we might have to put a sleeve on it and if its really really bad Ill have to get an entirely new bell housing(OUCH) he said no matter what It will all be under 1000 prob. closer to 600-800 if I need a new housing, but I do have a SI housing (the whole tranny actually) in my friends wrecked SI Id just have to pay the tow truck driver to tow it there, or Id have to take it out myself. He said it should be okay though and if so It will be back on the road by tomorrow.

the other weekend i put in an exedy clutch on a friend's B16 EG. it took about 8 hours to pull the trans, replace the clutch, put in a camber kit, and stop for snacks. even if the shop does the work, insist that they put in an exedy clutch that you will provide them!
**** man I was one step away from ordering a Exedey clutch kit-Clutch disc, Pressure plate, new flywheel, throwout bearing, clutch alignment tool, with next day shipping for 250....thats IT!......
Well screw that.....Its to late now theyve prob. already installed an OEM clutch. Oh well.....ill be at UTI next year and have plenty of time to install a new clutch with good tools whenever I want to.

ok, well aside from all that.....the deal with the pedal cluster. did you ever look real good with a flash lite at the metal bracket the pedals are hung. what you described sounds exactly like you broke one of the welds on the braket. i have done this twice now. good luck.
