B16a2 (SiR2)
hey guy's whats up? im new on here, but i want to updrade from my D16y8 to a B16a2 but im am going to keep it automatic. But it is not really ment for performance and something ive wanted to do and for awhile and it's mostly a dd, but i found the SiR2 as an automaitc. its the obd2 96-98 spec. but i was wondering if i could use the stock d16y8 wiring harness with the b16 but what would i have to use for the TCU? but the motor come with the p30 ecu, wiringhaness etc..its the complete change over. but any help would be great.
Well if you got the complete OBD2 swap with automatic and it's original ecu then you should just use it as is. What year is your car? If it's 99-00 then you'll need an adapter harness to convert the OBD2a-OBD2b, along with some other wiring mods I would think, since most converters aren't intended for automatics. There's not a seperate controller for the tranny.
my car is a 1997 ex. but most of the swap's ive heard about had to do something with a tcu? but then again they were swaps on eg's. but mine is a ek. cuz im ordering it from Hmotorsonline. but it should be the same OBD as my ex right? Thank's for the help also will i be able to use all the stock 96-98 spec mounts?
If the engine is coming from an EK Civic you should be good with mounts. Call up H-motors to confirm your questions, they know what's up and if you are buying the engine from them they can give you a little tech help I think.
Well I checked the dealer diagrams and there's no special extra control unit for the trans in your car.

no, that's awsome! so everything should plug right up then hugh? here lately i've been seeing other's tell people with this swap that they can use their stock d16y8 wiring harness with their B16a but i didnt know if it would be the same with an automatic tranny. but the p30 ecu is from the b16 right?
You will have to do some harness modification to make everything work right, but it's relatively minor. For starters, some branches you will have to lengthen to fit (like VTEC...it's farther away on the B16). Also you will have to change the plug on the crank sensor and IACV plugs to 2-wire version...they are 3-wire plugs on your Y8. That's probably the worst of it.
Yes the P30 is a B16 ecu.

I read something like that in HondaTuner mag. how long would all the wiring take plus insatll? my buddy who is helping me do the swap has done alot of other swap's so it should be a basic swap right, except for it's an auto tranny..lol also will i have to add any sensor's like knock sensor and etc..? and the stock mounts for the auto tranny from the 96-98 spec should bolt on with out any mods.?

You will have to use the mounts and brackets that come on the B16, not ones from your D-series. There is a knock sensor plug already on your stock harness, the D16Y8 comes with one.
How long the wiring takes depends on how skilled the person is who is doing it. I sometimes take a bit more time because I hate hacking/splicing plugs. I like to properly remove the terminal locks, release the wires, and insert the new plug onto the original terminals so you wouldn't know it got modified. In some cases like when you have to lengthen a branch you obviously have to cut the wire and add more into it but it should be soldered and covered in shrink-tubing, not twist-together and taped.

so i wont have to re-install any sensors or just that one.? but i hope he makes the wiring look good. im just helping install the motor on the car i dont know anything about wiring..lol
"IACV plugs to 2-wire version...they are 3-wire plugs on your Y8. That's probably the worst of it.'
SO,this would be the hardest part of the wiring correct?but everything els should be fairly simple right?

Yeah pretty much...there aren't any sensors that you will transfer over, the engine should have everything on it that the ecu is looking for. You'll change those connectors and your friend can lengthen branches as needed, that will be it.
that sounds pretty basic. hey is the obd2 (auto) b16a2(SiRII) usdm or jdm motor. i thought it was jdm?? cant remember but how do you think the power will be? alot better than that Y8 i had i hope and faster. have you done this swap befor or do u know someone who has done it? was it auto aswell.?
The B16 in the US was never available with an auto tranny. It only came in the del Sol VTEC, and 99-00 Civic Si both with 160hp. Most of the OBD1-up JDM B16's had 170hp. That's a 43hp increase over your d16y8. Down low it may not feel alot different but up top, when you punch it and it downshifts to pass and stuff like that you will definitely feel the difference.
I installed a manual trans B16 into a 98 CX hatch, it had a few mods on it and hauled pretty nicely.

so then my motor is a JDM b16(SiRII) then. how long did it take for your swap to be completed?
cuz i heard somewhere that only the canadien and jdm SiR's had an option of automatic, is that true??

Right...there never was an SiR model in the US. The B16A3 came with manual trans in the OBD1 del Sol VTEC. Then there was no B16 available for a few years after the del Sol was killed until 99 when the Si coupe came out, once again with a manual trans.
Maybe you have a Canadian version or it could be JDM, don't think it much matters anyways.
Well it was my first swap when I did it, it was an absolutely bitter frigid January here in Michigan, and I worked full time. Took a month to finish with those factors and other stuff we discovered one after the other. Like doing the harness mods, first learning the 99-00 ecu wasn't compatible with 96-98 cars, buying and waiting for parts...etc. One thing I suggest is getting a 99-00 Si radiator so you have a matching size inlet for the coolant hoses.

well in ky it is hard to find a si anywhere even in junckyards. where could i buy one? the radiator from the ex wont fit with the hose? hey some guy was telling me that the swap wasnt worth it cuz i would only get 110whp, that true? even if it is im still gonna do the swap.
I don't think 110whp is accurate, even the stock USDM B16 rated at 160hp puts out around 135whp so you'll be pretty close to that.
As for the radiator, well you might be OK with the automatic radiator, I think it's better than the one we were replacing in the Y7 manual trans car...guess you'll find out!

hey would i be able to use a SiR gauge cluster w/my auto even though the cluster came from a 5speed? and will it work correctly? i found one today it got yellow needles and almost a lime green red-line "indicator" it's bada*( looking.
I'm pretty sure you can use the manual cluster you just won't have the gear select indicator lights on it. As long as it comes from the same vintage vehicle (EK chassis) it will fit the car and is really easy to install.
oh,ok well then that should work.
hmotorsonline emailed me yesterday and said that i would probaly have to have my wiring harness from the sohc vtec, re-wired but not completly.
and i will have to add wires for the knock sensor and stuff like that.
does that sound about right. i know we had talked about this the other day but im just wanting to double check.

You will not need to add anything new to the harness, only swap a few connectors. You have a d16y8, which ,means you already have a knock sensor on your car so the plug is already there. Change the 2 plugs like I mentioned before and just make sure everything reaches where it needs to go and you'll be fine. There are some quick reference guides on the web to show you what to do, I can also walk you through it when you are ready.
that's good cuz when they wrote that i went and looked back at youre post, and i was like "that dosent sound like what you had told me" that's why i asked you again, cuz i thought i had missed something, what ur email address i'll send you my # if i need to call you for help w/the wiring but the guy who putting in the motor said to drop it off on a fri. and he'll try to have it back to me on sun. you think i'll have to move the tranny mount any, they are sending me the stock SiR 96-98 mounts.? also when hmotors say's shift linkage are they sending me the one for an auto? or can i use the shift cable from the y8 tranny to the b16 tranny?
I suppose they'll send you a cable, since you don't actually have "linkage". If they don't send the cable there's still a chance the stock one will work.
If the swap came from any EK Civic chassis you should be all good with the mounts that come on it. At least with the 99-00 Si all the rubber mounts on the chassis are the same as the D16, it's just the brackets on the motor that are different. Probably the same with yours.
