Default trans question

i just rebuilt a b16 trans with new syncros and a new third gear on the counter and mainshaft. now i go to put the casing back on and the case doesnt want to sit flush, its about 1/4in. space between the housings. anybody have any ideas what could be causing it not to sit flush. oh yeah. the snap ring is sittin right above the bearing and its not going down so the snap ring can snap onto the bearing.
