Default D16Z6 motor with D16Y7 intake Manifold question...

In a 96 DX hatch, with stock DX wiring harness, I just put in a 95 EX d16z6 motor. I mated the d16y7 96 DX intake manifold to the d16z6 motor (Did this so that I wouldn't have to change around wiring...everything bolts back to stock position). Its running extremely sluggish. Feels as if it has half the power of a bone stock motor. I redid all the timing and adjusted all the valve clearances.

Does my problem lie in using the DX manifold on the EX motor? Could this possibly cause the motor to run this horribly? Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Thnx in advance.

I haven't wired up the vtec yet, but this shouldn't hurt the performance as drastically as it is hurting now.... I mean I don't really need to optimize the performance yet... just need to get the car running like a normal car. I just need to car to drive around for a bit until my built motor is done.

I was wondering if it was the manifold since I read that the EX manifold has some type of additional valve that lets in more air near the injectors, where the DX manifold doesn't....

Still confused....

if you are running any other computer than the 96+ DX computer, you WILL have to rewire the IACV!!

3 wire iacv, y7 maifold, and anything else that has to do with the y7...JUNK. no vtec will make your vtec motor feel like poo

I was running the stock 96 DX ecu at first, ran horrible... then I changed it to a 94 EX obd1 P28 with the Skunk2 obd2 to obd1 piggyback harness, and it still seems to run pretty much the same...

Builthatch, so do you think my problem lies in the fact that i'm using the DX intake manifold, or do you think it may be something else?

so to summarize, the current problematic setup is:

96 DX Hb:

- 96 DX wiring harness
- 95 EX d16z6 motor
- 96 DX distributor
- 96 DX intake manifold & tb
- 94 EX obd1 P28 ECU w/Skunk2 piggyback harness

Does anyone know of any conflicts in this setup, or what would cause the problems?

Thnx again guys...

the im is probably not helping anything. z6 has a larger throttle body and longer runners on the im.

the iacv (idle air control valve) on your y7 manifold/tb is a three wire piece that only will run with a y7 ecu, but if you run the y7 ecu, you will have no vtec, unless you use something to activate it...since you are using a vtec ecu, locate a y8 (flows better than z6) manifold with a 2 wire iacv, go over all the wiring just to amke sure everything else is ok, and you should be fine. the y7 manifold design itself will def hinder performance with a vtec motor, but not as much as your speaking of...it sounds as if vtec is not working and you've a code in the ecu that is dumping fuel and kicking back timing, or worse...all those things will result in said sluggishness. good luck

he has one, he is just using the DX mani cause he is doesn't want to rewire/re-line the new manifold

builthatch...I was running the y7 manifold with the y7 ecu at first, then i changed to the z6 ecu and it still pretty much ran the same... If i were to try to rewire the IACV on the y7 manifold, how would I go about doing this? Do you mean to wire the sensor to the ecu? Thnx...

RR98DX, I saw your post... at first I ran the 96 DX ecu, and when I switched to the EX obd1 ecu, it still ran the same for the most part. How would I go about rewiring the IACV?
