94 4dr. EX-high engine temp. when idling
Hi:
I drive a 94 Accord EX 4dr. with roughly 190k miles. Starting about 6 months ago, I observed that when my car is idle for more than a few minutes (sitting in traffic, drive-thrus, etc.), the temperature gauge will slowly increase, and will eventually peg unless I either turn the car off for a bit, or if I start moving again. During this time, I can bring the temperature down to about the halfway mark on the temperature gauge, by turning the vent on full blast with the heat all the way up. The temperature problems occur whether I am in gear with the brakes on or in park/neutral. A/C is not running during this time either (it has its own problems and stays off.) Once I am moving again, the temperature creeps back down to its normal level of about one-quarter on the temp. gauge.
The only thing I have attempted as far as troubleshooting was to remove the radiator cap after the motor had cooled down for a bit, and I saw that there was fluid present near the top.
Suggestions are appreciated.

Check to see if the electric fans are kicking on. My guess would be that they are not.

I left the car running for about 10 min. after driving home from work; I saw two fans located in front of the engine by the radiator, and neither one kicked on while the engine was running. For what it's worth I checked the fan fuse and it isn't blown and I also checked the engine coolant level which is at an acceptable level.
Is the fan switch pretty easy to replace? If so I would like to try replacing that to see if it resolves the problem.

Could be a relay. I am no expert, but maybe the poster above can you give you specifics on the fan switch.
Try this. Turn the AC on, even it doesn't work. If the fans kick on, then there is your temporary fix until you can get the relay or fan switch fixed.

I am hesistant to try running the A/C as a temporary measure (see below link for my A/C issue details) Thanks for the suggestion though.

When I looked back at my old post, one dude suggested something about the cooling fan relay having an issue, so since this problem seems to be related to that as well, I will focus my efforts on diagnosing the fan/fan relay the next time I go to the mechanic, or may attempt myself if it isn't too messy.
In the meantime I can take back roads to avoid traffic, and do my health a favor and avoid fast food drive-thrus (for now)

I had this problem with my car, but I was losing coolant. What would happen is if the car got slightly over operating temperature, the busted radiator cap would let the coolant escape draining the radiator. Every couple days the radiator would be dry and I would overheat. New radiator cap solved it for me. I don't suggest this in your situation because you are not losing coolant.
Relays are easy to put in. It's one of the last things that I would call messy.

the fan switch is on the thermasat housing right under the coil. its right by the coil on the f22b2. the relay is in the under hood fuse box on the right side, on the bottom of the cover is the location of the different fuses and relays. they are both jobs that any one can do.
