Default Rev limited to Vtec RPM

Just as the title says....I was driving to the green bay packer game from my school (2.5 hour drive)....CEL on the way there. I didn't think it was serious....everything was fine, gased up before coming back home. THEN; while merging on the highway, from gear one to gear two, the rev limiter seems to kick in at 4100 RPM (my vtec switchover rpm), same goes from gear 2-3...etc...sucks! my mpg also went down from 230 miles for 1/2 tank to 172 miles half a tank. What's up??

yup ur low on oil. honda puts u can say a safety switch when ur low on oil and the car will only rev to 4k to save the motor instead of people revving to 6500k then they blow a rod. ive had the limp mode thing before.

oh, yeah, i think that could be eat, maybe I'm leaking?? cuz I'm almost 3000K since my last oil change, i'm about 800 miles short lol. Nothing to do with the vtec thingy majiggy? Also, my temp gauge seems to be fine, sits right below half. :X I'll do an oil change. I'll do a change on both trans and engine oil, Thanks for the input guys!

I had something kind of similar, except, at a given point, my car would rev all the way to limiter for a few seconds without me even pressing the pedal! I was freaking out the first time and luckily my foot was on the clutch..it happened a second time a week later so i changed my oil, put that **** that clears the injectors, and so far so good.

yeah, but even with a VTEC error it'll cut you off at 4K. I've left the solenoid unplugged by accident before.

Regardles... did you ever scan the code? In about 3 seconds you'd know why the car is in safe mode.

Yes, I was DEFINITELY low on oil. Drained it, (drain plug was a b!tch to get out this time around), and it came out to 1/2 quart....LOL...possible leak somewhere? I'm sure there's no burning...

1/2 QUART.... wow.... not good

Check around your engine see if your getting a leak, or on the drive way. Run it at the same time let it get nice and warm then check.

Same exact thing happened to my car.... My RPM's wouldn't go past 4k...... V tec wouldn't kick in at all... etc... my car was a mess ...... Sure enough i was low on oil! Had to take my car to get a few seals replaced because it was leaking oil !!! just cuz u cant smell burning oil doesn't mean ur car aint leakin... play it safe, take it to get it checked out and get ur seals replaced if u need them.... will save u from having to buy a new engine!!!! Unless u wana use that excuse to replace ur engine with a K20

That was a close call. Do all Honda motors have this safe mode?

If you're referring to 'limp mode', then yes, all 7th gen. Civics have 'limp mode'.

'limp mode' teehee makes me giggle.

But for the future guys, changing your oil on a regular basis 3k-5k I'm not gonna argue all the details for it... that's a whole other thread, and checking it every week or too and looking over your car (aka PREVENTATIVE maintenance) will benefit you greatly in the long run.
