Default timing adjutment

Hi all I am trying to find out how to adjust my timing. I have an d15b2 1.5 liter engine w/5 speed tranny. Motor is pinging real bad upon heavy exceleration I think the timing is off. Just replaced the motor with a jdm D15b and dont think we timed it right. Can some one let me know how to set it.

Since you have a clean motor I will help you. You need a timing light, 12mm socket for the dist. bolts, A paper clip to jump the service connector.

Timing light to battery and #1 cyl.
Loosen the bolts for the dizzy just enough so you can spin the dizzy.
Start the car and have it up to operating temps with no accessories on.
Jumper the service connector It is on the right hand side by the wiper fluid bottle in the engine bay. When looking at the motor like in pic.

Down on the timing belt cover on the backside of the motor mount you will see on the timing belt cover two little marks beside the black little cover. Those are your pointers.

Car is running and light hooked up and the bolts loose and the service connector jumpered we are ready to go.

Shine the timing light down by those marks and look at the crank pulley you will see a couple of red marks. Those need to line up with the pointers, Turn the dizzy until they line up. Note: If you have a adjustable timing light line up the red marks when set to 0 and then to double check dial in the advance you are suppose to have and look at the pointers you should line up with a white mark.

Turn off car, Unjumper, tighten bolts, disconnect the light and have fun. You might want to reset the ECU. In the engine bay you have a fuse block pull the Hazard fuse for ten seconds and close cover.

That is all. For those of you that would say SEARCH.... Do it and you will not find anything. That is why I wrote this all out. Any Q'sss just hollar.

#1 is closest to the timing belt, half full or half empty.

Thanks to everyone who gave me a hand on this matter. For your info zccr-xcsi I am going for total fuel economy. If I wanted huge power I think I would drive my fully blown Nissan Titan. 430 hp now thats real power but it really sucks on fuel economy.
Ok no back to the matter in hand. I found the timming marks, there is one red dot and 2 marks on the pulley. If I line it up to the red dot I get the clatter. If I line it up to the line marks on the pulley it runs fine but witch line do I line it up with.
Thanks

One red mark? There should be two red marks with one in-between them. Give it another look.

Whatever colors they are there should be three indentions on the pulley get it in that area. with the timing light set to 0.

The lone mark about 3/4" away from the three is your TDC mark. If you can dial in the timing light to your spec then you can use this mark.

And yes #1 is closest to the timing belt.

Damn guy's he's allready struggling.... easy on him.

Yeah I know I figured that.
The pulley only has one red mark on it and 2 small marks shortly after that red mark. They are small slash marks. If I line it up to the second slash mark it runs great no pinging. If I line it up to the red dot a whole hell of alot of pinging going on. Confused. I have just a regular tming light. Hooked it up to #1,pos and neg on battery and shorted out the plug in the engine bay.

To Thesmogman; Nice writeup.

On the pully, the mark towards the back of the car is the TDC mark. Their are a couple of marks towards the front. One of those is a little less retarded than the other. Since your getting pinging, I would try the mark closer to TDC, first. The TDC mark is about 3/4 inch or so from the other two marks.
