Default Sewing Leather

right now i have some kinda crappy shift jacket wait i take that back. I have a non name brand jacket that was tailored to me. it fits amazing, is made with good quality leather, has armor & zips to my assless chaps i mean riding pants. lol i got the jacket tailored about 4 months ago and ever since then I've sworn ill never go back. I'm buying a new suit soon but the problem is that for a full suit back in the states it costs around $250 - $400. my buddy got his completed at just under 16 hours keep in mind most leather place (that i know of) charge around $20/hr for the work. That all being said, I'm really thinking about just doing the work my self. I no seamst-er but i feel confident that i work a sewing machine to bring in the different parts. all i know about sewing leather at this point is that regular machines wont handle the stress so im thinking about buying a vintage one off ebay for $40 with all metal parts. the needle is a special leather needle, ill use some hard core thread. have any of you considered doing this or actually done this? I know its a lot of money to be messing around with and would be rather time consuming but it would also be one more thing making me feel in tuned with my bike. It always feels better know you did the work your self then rather then just coughing up the money to pay someone.

hmm well before you rip apart your new jacket i would practice on the old one, if your not gonna use it anymore. also, tailoring is about more than just sitching it back together. all the seams have to be straight, and even. youll propably end up doing the sleves a cupple times if you wanna get it just right.

i only feel better about DIY when i have the slightest idea what im doing, and when it comes to sewing, i can hardly close the holes in my undies. and they usually split open anyway.
