hey guys, i recently baught a teal EG after my R81 hatch got stolen (a month ago or so) and i want hitch on this one. i simply dont like the idea of one bolting through the spare tire well....there are two frame rails going almost to the end of the unitized body, are there any hitches that bolt through there rather then through the floor?

check reese hitches, you prolly have to order it. i've seen them, but they can be hard to find for small cars. u-haul usually carries and installs hitches for an absurd price.

 

I'm going to be installing a hitch on my hatch also, for my bike rack. I'm just not trying to spend an absurd amount for a hitch.

 

Anybody have a hitch on their EGG?
I tried hitchfinder.com, but they have a hitch for only the coupe and 4-door, and no hatch.

 

Try U-Haul. They have a Class 1 (2000 lbs.) for the hatches that bolts into the bumper support, no drilling through the floor pan.

P/N# 27115, retails for $149.95. That's the Draw-Tite.

Curt also sells one for $124.95 P/N# 11209, but that's the one that goes through the trunk pan.

 

Search hitch 27115 online, there seems to be a number of better prices out there on them.

WTF kind of hitch bolts itself to the floorpan underneath the spare tire? That's the most retarded thing I have ever heard.

Even the cheap class 1 hitches that our cars can support will always bolt themselves to the frame rails.

I'm guessing no, since it lists an Acura EL as an alternative platform. I'll assume that one's for a coupe or sedan.

If you're going with Draw-Tite, use the P/N I referenced above.

Frame rails are the strongest part of a vehicle, I completely agree with you. Although I used to love putting holes in Jetta owners' trunk pans to install hitches.

Keep in mind that there are also lots of cars out there that were never designed to have hitches on them, so they need to be mounted in non-conventional ways.

 

I'm not sure how extreme you want to get. I removed my reinforcement from the rails (those 2 bolts) and made my own brackets from some channel steel. I had a Ford F-350 hitch laying around (I manage a body shop) and so I cut the mounting brackets off of it and welded my brackets in place. The hitch now comes through the cover, but I've got a class III hitch on my Civic hatch. I tow a 16' car hauler with it. The trailer has brakes so I'm not worried about stopping and the car has a K20 with a 4.8 final drive so I can pull quite a bit. People look at me funny. I've towed a CRX and a Ranger on the trailer. No problems. If I can, I'll get some photos up.

 

I pulled my trailer with my 4wheeler on it with my EG. It worked fine.


Oh, and the one on my car bolted through the body.

 

Just remembere that your hitch may be rated Class 3, but that doesn't mean it can tow that much. I'm surprised you are able to tow a car hauler with a little Civic LOL.

Reminds me of driving through TX last summer and seeing a guy towing a 30' boat with a Dodge Omni that's *** was scraping the ground.

 

She does just fine. Oh, I've taken the necessary suspension and braking precaution on the car as well. I drove a tow truck for many years. I know what you mean by folks hauling more than they should. It's funny though, I was recently in the Czech Republic and I saw a couple of cars hauling large trailers. In America we have big diesel trucks hauling jet skis. I just don't get it. I was thinking of purchasing a $500 beater truck to haul stuff and then I figured....with all the maintenance, insurance and other costs, why not just buy a trailer. Don't get me wrong, if I were hauling everyday I'd get a truck, but for the occasional tow it works great.
