Bypass Valve (trying to prove a point)
how many of you recommend an aem bypass valve. just vote
feel free to add reasoning. whether you feel its a gimmick, you lose horsepower, you have to be in like 3ft of water flooring your car to suck up that much water into your engine, lets suck some foam into our throttle bodies, etc. (can you tell im not bias?)

- likelyhood of actually sucking water into your cylinders = very slim
- 1st batch of bypass valves had problems with foam being sucked into the t/b
and whatever else people will add. i hear that you really have to be sitting in a couple feet of water just flooring your car to actually suck a significant amount of water through youre intake. all you really need to do is avoid HUGE puddles anyway. or just put your car in neutral and coast through anything that looks too deep for you.

Sorry, but my man here has a very valid, and from personal experience too, point.
hydrolock is death for a motor, all you need is water to cover the filter (CAI) which is very plausable, it can happen, your not gonna miss 2 hp that bad....for all that doubt , dont risk it...get a bypass....

i heard that the bypass valve allows a lot of dirt and dust to get into your engine. From what i hear, with a bypass valve the damage you do to your motor will be noticed in the long-run. Also i have known people that had a bypass valve on their car (after the recall) that the plastic parts deteriorated and fell apart. Has anyone else heard about these kinds of complaints or anything simular??
When I was 17 I hyrdolocked my stock thunderbird, going through ~12" of water. Needless to say that's the last time that ever happens.
When I removed the bypass filter on my ITR, it was a night and day difference. The inside of the aem tube had a nice fine layer of dust/crap on it. I'd hate to know how much of that crap made it into my precious motor.

question, i have friends with jeeps, and when they suck water up into their cylinders, and their car stalls, they pull their plugs out. then they turn the key like theyre starting the car, and they shoot all of the water out of the cylinders. then they dry off their plugs, put them back in (or put new ones in) and the car starts right back up. does this only work for jeeps? i hear everythings fine as long as you dont try starting your car with all that water in the cylinders.

That is a very good question to bring up. I don't exactlly know the answer, but there has to be a logical one somewhere. A coworker and I always discuss it, he has had many trucks ingest water and just cranking w/o plugs would clean out the cylinders. They're v8's, and it's amazing how they can get away with some water ingestion. Maybe it has something to do with engine design, having more cylinders or heads to allow a better distribution of the water. One thing I think that should have some relevance is engine speed. The faster the motor is spinning, the more force, the more damage occurs; and quicker. With my thunderbird, I was at partial throttle, and it was enough damage to bend a few rods and ruin the block. On an ohv 4cyl I would think the damage would be pretty bad, should enough water get into a specific quench area. Higher compression would make this scenario even worse. But who knows, i'm almost finished my 2nd

Jeeps have a snorkle that goes up to near top of the hood. It's pretty tough to get water sucked up in there. The intake hole is over 4ft off the ground. I've ridden in my freind's Jeep through a 3ft deep trough of water over 20 ft long without even a sputter...

you know what i find funny, why is it that the people that have blown their motors, tend to have blown more than 1? ive got a friend thats on his 3rd or 4th motor in a civic, and every motor hes had has been new. hes the only one out of our group of hondas that has actually blown a honda motor, and hes done it 3 times! ive known people online that have blown more than one motor. is it just a coincidence? i think not, i think some people are just cursed. anyone know what im sayin?
u really have 2 submerge the filter for it 2 do damage. If u just be carefull while in the rain u have nothing 2 worry about. But if u ride 60 mph and not pay attention 2 puddles then u prolly need a bypass valve...
hey i got an idea , what if you get a oil catch can, and that hose that used to be for the crank case breather system, you put one of those K&n crank case breather filters, wouldnt that work the same way

just got this today, figured id post it. dyno chart with and without the bypass valve, the red is with, blue is without. it was done i think on two different days, not sure, so temperature could have been a little of a factor (i think thats whats causing like a 1hp loss all across without the bypass valve) but mainly it gives you an idea as to where you lose power from the valve.
