Major servicing for a 2001 Accord
Our 2001 2.3L 5M Accord is 6 years old, has 55,000 miles on it and all that's ever been changed on it has been the oil, air filter, tires and wipers.
I'm planning on getting the following work done on it:
- replace brake fluid (and service notchy rear drums)
- replace coolant (and add a block heater)
- replace manual tranny fluid (any prefs for a synthetic brand? specs req'd?)
- oil change (considering going synthetic - is 0W20 okay? brand? specs req'd?)
- replace timing belt
- replace water pump (does old coolant hurt water pumps?)
Thinking of plugs and wires too...
Any feedback, missed items or recommendations welcome.

Check for specific coolant, I would not go below 5Wsomething on your oil, thinner oils are becoming popular, thinner than the book calls for but I do not know about 0 weight on an '01. By the book, there is plenty of work to do and I know that is what you are asking, maybe the dealer will give you a printout of scheduled MX requirements at the different milage intervals. Do you not have the manual, isnt it in there too???
i know at 45000 your suposed to take it to the dealer and they check everything for you, its recomended but not a must. and usualy timing belts dont need to be done untill after 100k but im not an expert. and i always use mobil one oil 10w 30 its expensive but when it comes to oil its ok to buy the best
If you have an oil leak in the timing cover or heavy city driving (this is concidered severe duty) then the belt and all components need to be changed sooner.
I run and automotive shop and own a 98. I recomend flushing brake & coolant fluids only if necessary or every 90K and Manual Trans. fluid every 90K with 10w40 motor oil. Have them do a full inspection on drivetrain, belts, hoses, brakes, tires, A/C, electrical and so forth and replace whatever necessary. Have your timing belt done every 75K and you'll be straight, however do replace all of your front seals, valve cover gasket and water pump while you're at it. Try to use OE Honda parts, they're inexpensive and always work best. Using Synthetic 5w30 every 5K miles won't hurt either and switch to 10w30 if you run it hard or have over 100K miles on the odometer - Hope this helps.
