Here is my write-up for installing a factory OEM HID D2R (non projector) kit from a 99 Acura TL. It took a little bit of improvising, since I have never done this before, but it was pretty much the same as the DA version I found on that other popular 2nd gen Integra forum, but this is just my version using the J-spec EG headlights. Okay, start off with the bulbs, this will take the most time. Grind off the 3 tabs, and grind a little round slit at 3 o clock looking from the back of the bulb. This will align the bulb and don't worry about the bulb falling thru the housing cause the D2R/S plug will hold it from falling in. Note that the lil rod on the bulb aligns on the bottom if you are disoriented.


If you wanna be smart, utilize the bulb seals. If you wanna be even smarter, make up something that will totally seal the rubber back up. Anyways, you gotta cut a slit in the rubber to shove the plug thru it.


This is the difference between the D2R bulb and the D2S. The D2S don't have that light blocking line on the bulb.


I took a paperclip and somewhat fabricated a replica of the regular bulb clip, but be careful cause these are weak. Try using something thicker. This is to hold the bulb from falling back out. I also bent the back piece in a V shape cause it helps put pressure back on the bulb when you clip it in, and note that you have to unscrew the original clip just far enough to wiggle the clip out, then put in the paperclip the same way you took the other one out. Not rocket science!


Here's how it looks when its in.

Still mounts the same as the original clip.


Do yourself a favor and do it right. Get some shrink tubing, and solder. It will never come apart by accident unless your solder job sucked (knock on wood). Note the lil black clip to the right of the ballast. It's a standard H4 or sealed beam harness sold at all auto parts stores. I soldered this harness directly to the ballasts wires so the kit will be plug and play. I used some funky male-to-male brass connectors to plug into it, which will mate into the car's factory plug.


I told you its all about Matsushita!


Here it is back in the car. I might try to find a way to seal that rubber back up. I am not satisfied with it. I hurried to get it installed for everyone to see, but I am sure it'll be fine. I used electrical tape (red) to cover up the lil H4 harness I bought, so it'll secure the plugs, and then I zip tied the 2 plugs faced-to-face so they don't shake loose. McCulloch recommends doing this.


Don't laugh at my zip tie obsession. This is probably just gonna be temporary until I find the right materials to mount it up. Like I said, I wanted to show everyone my version with the TL HIDs.

NOW FOR WHAT YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR, AND YES ESPECIALLY ILL_TAKE_ONE. I THINK YOU WILL BE SATISFIED WITH THIS BEAM PATTERN. I AM... ESPECIALLY WHEN ITS COMPARED TO MY FRIENDS AFTERMARKET HID KIT ON HIS S14 (H1 KIT). I NOTICED A BIG *** DIFFERENCE. ENJOY!!!










Lots of flare but what can you do huh?

Some reasons why I think this setup is better than using any aftermarket HID kit

1. D2R bulb width is almost identical to that of the H4H so it won't shake around in the socket

2. The filament placement in the bulb is identical so it still has practically the same beam pattern and placement (note: because of the large HID plug, when you install it, it sits back like 1/8th of an inch further than the stock H4H bulb depending on the brand of HIDs)

3. D2R/D2S bulbs are OEM, so very easy to find at any dealer or on ebay =-)

4. Because they are OEM, they are not brand/model specific, so prices are lower and you don't have to only buy that brand

5. Factory kits have DOT approval #s for the bulbs, not just the ballasts (maybe you can convince a cop its legal with that)

6. A truly OEM kit has not been taken apart and modified, so it should have almost no problems at all

7. Simply, it just fits better than any other bulb size in the H4H housing

On a clear night, you may still catch a hint of the glare....

 

What clear night I thought in cali its all smog?

No, they are just D2R bulbs stuck in there to replace the H4H bulbs that the JDM headlights take, which you can't really buy in this country except through a few importers.

I looked at the pics again, the glare isn't AS bad as some that I've seen, but the beam pattern still just doesn't have the width and clarity of OEM HID projectors.

And they're probably brighter than the S14 because it appears to have some junk@$$ high color temperature bulbs in it.
