Default Y8 CRX vs B16 CRX

Well, to begin with, I know what my avatar says. However, We'll call this a test and tune.

Anyways, to begin with, I pulled my car out of the garage and decided that it was finally time to see how that sunnabitch pulls. 800+ kms on the new clutch, I figured it was broken in and in good order. So my brother and I take the CRX out and stretch it's legs... WAAAAHHHH peels out through first, Pulls to 7200 rpm, peels out in second, and by this time I'm flying. I thought the little sohc puled pretty hard.

However, its first real test came soon. My brother (Raene) pulled his B16 CRX out of the garage - you know, Xsi B16, S1 tranny, 14.6 in the quarter... and we decide to do a little comparo. Stop light type stuff. We couldn't find a good light, on one race Raene missed his shift, and we had bad luck. Finally, on our last run. We stopped at a green light and I gave the one-two-three handsignal... whoops, shoulda concentrated more on the launch. CHirp at 2000 the sohc pulls hard, Raene slowly pulls away. Spin into second at 7200 rpm, Raene is now about a length and a half away, and I stop shortly after I shift into third. WOW! I can't BELIEVE the little Y8 pulled that hard... With my old motor my car was gone 2 lengths behind his in first... jeeze! Give props to the sohc D-series! they're not all that bad!!!!! Yeeha. Now I really have to be careful, cause too much throttle in first and it roasts 'em. My old A6 would hook nicely at 3000 rpm and just go, the Y8 just spins! I have to relearn how to launch! Ayways, that's my night of fun! Hope y'all liked it.

I must say, I'm impressed..

First off we went around the block once or twice, did a few stop-and-roast starts. Geez, that thing pulls hard in 3rd!! Then he let me drive it while he stood outside and listened... not my car so I didn't take it up past 7... closer to 6800... but it sounds really good

Stopped off at home, picked up my car for the aforementioned test-and-tune. Had to drive around for a bit since the b-series seems to take about 5 years to warm up compared to the d-series. Finally went and weighed the cars - 910kg for my brother, 930 for me (970kg with him in the car, 1010kg with me in the car... hahahaha... the scale thinks I'm one fat-*** **** :thumbup. Coming out of the truck stop we lined up at a little light. Light turned green, he launched great and I bogged... I watched him squeal the tires for about 50-100 feet before I finally pulled even and then walked away. I should mention: LOUD exhaust! Argh! Hahahah..

Drove around for a bit longer, couldn't find another light so we lined up after a left turn, stopping in the middle of the road (red light behind us). I gave the one-two-three, launched pretty well and worked Matt off the line - he peeled all the way - and then I couldn't put it into 2nd... blehhh... but boy as soon as I got it in gear (and he took his foot off the throttle) I was gone! Wowsa! hahahah...

Anyway, stopped at the next green light again, he gave the one-two-three. I launched at 3000, dumped the clutch and feathered the throttle. All I hear is SCREEEEEEEEECH-BWAAAAAAAAAA from Matt's car (my window was open) and he's at my rear bumper. I take it up to about 7600rpm and dump 2nd. Actually get it in this time, a nice long bark from the tires and I'm off. Glance in the rearview - holy ****, he's right beside me! Take it right up to 8000 - can't let the SOHC roast me - and bark 3rd. Holy ****, he's still right behind me!!! Then we both shut it down... I must say, I'm more than a little impressed! I can't wait until next week, see what timeslips it pulls!

I've been telling both of you guys this all along! There's nothing wrong with a d-series! The B16 and y8 are very close torque wise and the b16 only really shines in third gear. That's why I went with a y8, gives me more than enough power for autox and doesn't change the front end weight of the car.

yeah I'm not that surprised actually...the b16 usually shines as the speeds increase.

Now I find myself wishing that I had gotten a B18B for that low end torque Oh well, I'm happy with the y8. Couldn't afford the B-series anyways... And now I have the car converted to OBD-I, newer engines will be easy to put in later

Hey, how hard was it to convert the car to obd-1?
My car has 250k on it and id like a new motor, and i can get the sohc vtec for about 400bucks.
Im wondering if i should go through with this swap, or go zc?
I could put the sohc vtec in myself very easy, but is there shops that do wiring? Just thought i should ask someone thats been through it. THANKS.

well, here's the stuff you'll need to do it yourself: Complete wiring harness, engine. P28 ECU with the plugs and about 8 inches of wires left on them (if you plan to make the converter harness yourself.) A soldering gun. I have a complete list of instructions for all the wiring changes, if you want them IM me.

The B16A especially shines on the freeway. With endless rev capacity (8200RPM, actually) and a short fifth gear, acceleration is just a stab of the throttle away. Freeway revs are quite high - about 4800RPM at 80MPH. But with its short stroke and long rods, you won't hurt it. Even if you cruise at high speeds all day long. Naturally, you feel quite invincible on the hills. It is actually quite rare to encounter a grade that a B16A CRX CANNOT climb in fifth gear. And I find there is nothing like the need to downshift on a mountain pass that makes a car feel like a weakling.
