e30 m3 is my favorite car of all time. I would have bought it if they were available new in 98-01, but they obviously weren't. I just can't justify spending $20k on an used car at my current financial situation. However, when I have a bit of $$$ aside, I'm definitely picking up an e30 m3.
as for the performance goes, at the hands of a very good driver, a stock e30 m3 will own itr in every track event (drag racing... i don't know). there are still plenty of aftermarket parts to make that car very fast and handle amazingly.
if you can afford both, then by all means go for it... they are becoming harder and harder to find in prisitine condition.

I did at a autocross.

That guy (e30 m3) doesn't know how to drive. ITR and e30 m3 aren't even in the same class... I believe e30 m3 is in BS or AStock over ITR's DStock status.
He was in the SM class and I was in the DS class. Not sure what that means...

an M3 will murda a type r anyday of the week, even if the M3 driver didn't know how to drive he will still kill the type r!! These two classes of car are very different and cannot be compared!!

This is incorrect. A Civic CX 1.5L with an experienced driver can beat a Corvette Z06 with an inexperienced driver. It happens all the time...
What kind of slicks was the CX on, and were the Z06 tires flat?
They handle pretty similar up until the point where the tires start slipping. My ITR is faster, but it also has more work in it right now, and it's fully gutted. My E30 still has the entire interior.
My E30 would lose in a straight line because it's heavier by a bit, plus I've got a really nice header and basically no exhaust on the ITR.
However, I will say this. With the full J stock setup from Turner, the handling, feedback, and feel on the E30 is friggin amazing, even on crap *** $50 tires.
With equal development, I'm betting they would be neck and neck.

my friend has a m3, and i raced him with my itr. I had him beat all untill third gear where he took off. We raced about a half a mile and he had me by about a car length and a half
I have an 88 M3 and a 97 ITR. I have tracked the M3 heavily and there is something about the car, it is absolutely perfect to drive fast. I don't know what it is about it. I feel totally comfortable at the track in it. The balance is amazing. The sound of the tires howling at the limit, but having no fear and total confidence that the car will pull through the curve is pure bliss. It is not a straight line accelerator and neither is the ITR in my opinion. I'm not a 1/4 mile guy so i have no idea what either the cars will do in a straight line. I will be tracking the ITR for the first time this summer so we'll see how it compares. I used to use the M3 as a daily driver for my 40 min commute to work and bought the ITR as my daily driver replacement. But ever since i picked up the ITR the M3 has been collecting dust. I've had the M3 for sale since i got the ITR last october but something keeps holding me back from putting effort into selling it. The ITR feels tighter probably cause it only has 23k miles versus 123k for the M3. My father has a e36 M3 which i've tracked once. I still like the e30 better, plus it looks stunning for a 14 year old car. Take a look at some pics....Drop me a line if you or someone you know might be interested. i'm located in the mid west.....thanks

I raced one on the track, but this one was stripped and had about 230bhp with cams and all that stuff. Also very nice suspension setup with full adjusatable coilovers used in Rally cars (it is called ProFlex or something). It was very close, only 0.6 seconds slower than me on 50 driv-seconds. The driver was a pro too.
I think some of you may not be aware of which M3 we're talking about. The E30 M3 is the old boxy style BMW with the fender flares that look tacked on. It came with 192 hp but at 2865 lbs was significantly heavier than the R. It's the one that looks like this:

The E30 M3 is one helluva car. It's what I wanted when I graduated from college back in 97, but I couldn't afford a $20K used car on two or three year loan. Fantastic car, but pricey to purchase and maintain.
From all I've heard and read, it's a fantastic track car and would own the ITR.
As far as autocrossing, I believe the E30 M3 is BS, not DS. It was *not* reclassified last year after many of us wrote letters asking them not to! It is STX legal, however.
Check out this month's GRM. They compare the E30 variants (318is, 325is, M3) on the autocross course. Suprisingly the M3 was the heaviest and only second fastest. In all fairness, it wasn't as well prepared, but it still didn't dominate like I expected.

Oh yeah, the biggest problem with the E30 M3 is that the motor is high strung, and is quite finicky compared to a B18C5. Upgrades cost WAY more, and are harder to perform.
I still love mine though
