Ridgeline Timing Belt
I recently bought a new Ridgeline, partly because many told me it had a timing chain, rather than a belt. I found out shortly thereafter that it has a belt, so I'm with many of you guys who have to worry about it breaking, or at least eventually replacing it. I'm wondering if it's such a big job that I should let the dealer do it, or if I should try it. I had a 1990 Geo Tracker, on which the timing belt was not that big a deal at all to replace (longitudinal engine, crank pulley held on with five capscrews, no mounts in the way). Do I have to take a motor mount off and support the engine? Is there some crazy procedure with the tensioner I could easily screw up? Does the crank pulley come off easily, or is it the one with that huge center bolt that's a disaster to get off?
Does anyone know if that has an interference engine?

So it should be pretty easy if I have the maintenance manual from Honda? How does the crankshaft pulley attach? Is it with a few easily removable screws, or is there a huge nut in the center that's going to be a horribly difficult disaster to get off? What all do I have to take off to get to all that stuff?
Thanks for all your help.

Do you mean that this 19mm bolt is usually on there pretty hard, and that the mechanic would easily loosen it with an air wrench? Is there any chance I could get it off myself? What holds the crank still while this is being done? Would the mechanic do this while all the belts and everything are still on the car, or do things have to come off to get to this bolt?
Thanks again!!!
Thanks again!!!
It's a waste giving away knowledge to people who don't have the means to use it. I've done T-belts at 85k because the customer wanted it and have found auto tensioners leaking, so 15k early isn't that bad of an idea.

If you recently go it why are you worried? I have a new ridgeline also and I am a Honda Mechanic. I most certainly will not be replacing it till it is due!
I think it is too early to worry about a timing belt change on a ridgeline yet unless you already have close to 90k miles on it. When you reach that line, have an experienced mechanic do it, Honda will charge you an arm and two legs, LOL.

It's the usual 19mm crank bolt. Easiest and least painful way for a DIY job would be to drive it to a dealer and have them break it loose and just snug it up tight enough to get it home.
If you replace the tensioner you won't need any special tools. With a service manual it will be easy.</TD></TR></TABLE>
wow you would do that. i work at honda too and we would never do that for someone. i would be like go talk to a service advisor and have him write you up for a 6cyl timming belt and water pump and get my 6 hours of labor.
i doubt the dealer would loosen the crank pulley for you your best bet is to take it to tire kingdom or tires plus and throw the guy a 5.

You would need the crank holder tool with a breaker bar in order to break it loose. I sometimes have a hard time getting it to break loose with my impact gun at 200 psi.</TD></TR></TABLE>
ingersoll rand ftw 1000 torque!

is that with the drive belt and coolant?.
we get six and 95 percent of the time they buy the coolant and drive belt so it comes out to 7.5, otherwise we have to reuse the coolant.
not worth the time if they don't buy the coolant i have spare that i just put in. i hate reusing fluids

Reuse coolant expletive that!!!! 8 hours timing belt, water pump, coolant, and both drive belts. They want t-belt only its still the same labor

If you are going to pony up the money to get a t-belt, you are a retart not to get the water pump or the tensioners, they are all run on the t-belt.
the timing belt is pretty easy like someone else said take to the dealer to have that crank bolt loosend even if someone charges 30 buck it is money well spent i also recomend replaceing the tensioner
Chains break too! Worse than that they stretch and they rattle which modern timing belts rarely do (stretch I mean).

Here is a detailed video with step-by-step instruction on the replacement of the timing belt on the Honda Acura V6 J Series engine, including the replacement of the pulleys, tensioner, as well as the water pump and special tools needed to complete the job.
