Replacing rings and their chain reaction.
So it's looking like I might need to replace the rings in my B16A2. However, the motor has 120,000 hard miles on it, so no matter what, I am going to replace the pistons. Now, if needed, I want someone to correct my understanding of something. As per my knowledge, if you replace pistons you don't want to use the new ones with old pins. But, you don't want to use new pins on an old rod. And if you replace the rod, you would replace the bearings by default...Am I looking at an entirely new reciprocating assembly?
Boy it's tough being a noobie,
Most likely you can reuse your OEM pistons. It depends on what damage or not is done to the cylinder walls. The machine shop will tell you what you need.
You will need rod and main bearings, but wait until the shop tells you what you need.
First thing you want to do is find a local shop that knows what there doing.
Then ask them what you need to buy or just tell them what you think you want. They should guide you and help you.
Don't just go out and buy things before you know what you need.
Go talk to the shop first.

Alot of times on OEM pistons that get beaten on and not taken care of the ring lands get destroyed so new pistons might be a must. Bearings depending on the condition but i always replace just for piece of mind. Wrist pins go for the pistons, if you get new pistons youll get new pins. Rods are reusable unless you see a defect. But i agree with 1992Si, go talk to a shop.
BTW 1992Si = Congrats on your first 9 sec pass

Can't agree more, I spent 3 grand on a storker kit once, only to go with a different motor entirely... lmao the dumb **** we do...
