Default 97-98 Type R vs 00-01 type R

I have read and heard from a few people that the 97-98 type R are better and produce more power than the 00-01 type r's. People have told me that 97-98 models were completely made by hand and were hand ported. I will appreciated it if people commented with their opinions. Thanks!

97-98 tend to dyno higher, but 00-01 tend to be faster...

hear hear... as far as the hand build thing goes, my understanding is that production outstripped what the ONE GUY was able to handle so they put more guy's on the job.. But they are still hand asembled...

And the dyno makes a difference, as well as the ac/no ac issue, as well as temp, humidity,altitude.. get my point?

The newer R's do have a slight HP advantage stock, but since my car is the last stock R on the planet, what diference does it make

Your dyno time should be used for tuning and determining how mods affect you.. comparing raw numbers is like bench racing.. nothing gets proved

Don't know what's better.

But the part number for the intake cam and the ECU are different.

I will find more differences when I have free time at work.

As funny as your reading it?

First two years dyno higher.

Last two years seem to have better performance figures. The only documented difference, however, is the '00/'01 ITR intake cam has a little more duration.

It's possible that magazine testers finally learned how to drive the cars, and that accounts for the almost one second difference in 0-60 times.
George I have to completely disagree.

my 98 R made 159.9 stock. My 2000 R made 167 stock. WIth an AEM my 98 makes 163 and my 2000 R made 171. I am pretty sure than intake cam change on the 2000/2001 R's made a visible power bump.

My 2000 R ran a 14.2 with just an AEM and I have not run the 98 at a drag strip so I would say performance is likely a reflection of the numbers.

edit: added performance numbers.

George,

How many miles were on your car when you dyno'd it. Did you ever put it back on with more miles and still stock?

what is wrong with this thread? George and I were having a perfectly good conversation.

George,

30k miles is plenty for what I had in mind. Interesting. We joke about cars here as monday cars and wednesday cars. Weak ones were built on mondays off the weekend hangover and Wednesday is the day they have the most practice at doing it right without the haze of the weekend to come
