Opinions on my friend starting on a 1400cc cruiser
This will be my friends first bike, I was wondering if it was safe for him to start on a 2000 suzuki 1400 intruder, it's a cruiser bike and 1400cc. The reason why I'm asking is because on a sports bike with that much cc, i.e. zx-14, he would probably kill him self. But since it's a cruiser bike, is there a difference? thanks
Safe? in my opinion no. Even if your friend its very carefull and the intruder its a cruiser it can get him into real trouble and that bike its not easy to control.
The other downside its that its a very heavy bike and he will surely drop it a couple of times.

Probably not the best choice to start on. It's big and heavy and powerful. I wouldn't compare the power to a zx-14, but it will still bite you in the *** if your not careful. And I would hate to ride a big heavy cruiser, turns would be a nightmare. My $0.02
He should get a sportster instead

he would be better off learning on a kawi 500 or gs500 then moving up to a big heavy *** cruiser
My co-worker learned on a 1200cc Harley and is doing fine. That thing is slow as hell and is easy to ride. Even the newer 1800cc Japanese cruisers only make slightly more HP than a 600cc sportbike and weigh twice as much.
He will be just FINE. Yes, it's heavy, all cruisers are. It's only got 57 horsepower, and by the time he gets to stupid speeds, the wind will want to push him right off the back of the bike anyway. And it's so low, that he should have no problem standing flat footed at a stop. I say go for it.

Well with a big heavy bike you're more likely to have a low speed f-up than a high speed one so that's a plus. However, negotiating turns could easily bite him in the *** too. I would recommend starting out with a smaller cruiser if that's his thing but all in all I'd have to say starting out with an Intruder isn't a terrible choice, just not the best one.
