Default help with blending for paint repair

I have a couple small areas on my R that I would like to repair. They will require sanding. Im worried about blending/sanding in the current clear coat that is on the car that is near the area I will be fixing. During the repair process, will wetsanding with high grit ensure no scratches appear in the SURROUNDING area that I repair? Im new to this so if Im off base please point me in the right direction. Any tips are appreciated. I figure if I mess it up then Ill have it done professionally but since its already messed up Id give it a shot myself.

all you need to use on the surrounding area is a scotch brite, or you can also 800 dry/wet prep it if you have some nasties that wont scuff off.
