need help with rear brakes
hey, i was helping my friend out doing the brakes on an 89 prelude tonight. iv done tons of brake jobs before so i know what im doing. its disk in the front and rear. front went fine, no problems at all. now for the back, i cant get the piston to go back into the caliper. its like this on both sides. i opened the brake fuid release valve thing thinking with out the presure the piston should slide right back in. nothing at all, not only that, but no fluid even came out of them. it was like this on both sides. am i completly missing something.? we are trying to finish this up in the morning so any help at all would be awesome. thanks a lot
You should see what looks like a plus sign built into the face of the piston, there is a special cheap tool to turn the piston inwards, it screws in unlike the fronts. Look at the new brake pads, on the back is a tit sticking out, you have to orient the plus on the piston to match this tit or the pads wont seat properly and everything will not fit around the rotor on reassembly. Make sure the rubber dust boot around the piston does not rotate with the piston or it will tear, use a scribe or small screwdriver to loosen it up all the way around and maybe even add a drop (only) of brake fluid to lube it so it will spin around while the piston is turning inward.
Get what looks like a square metal block with **** on it from Autozone, they know this univeral brake tool for screw in type caliper pistons. You will use a ratchet handle and three inch, 3/8 drive extension.
