Help with heater fan
took my moms 91 crx hf to store and the heater sounded like it was fading in and out and dieing. started to smell something burning so im assuming the fan motor is dead right? Im just gonna goto junkyard and get a motor for it. Is this a pain in the *** to do?
when that happened to me: the motor went bad and the smell was from the blower motor resistor that sits next to it. It happened on my old DA, but the unfortunate thing is that it was during a test drive for a guy that supposed to buy it. needless to say, that didn't work out.
replaced the motor and the resistor and everything's cool now

If the blower motor works all the time when put on HIGH, and fades on and off when at lower speeds, It's probably the resistor. The resistor controls the lower speeds, but high is straight "full power" even if the resistor goes bad, high will work as long as the blower motor is ok.
You have to remove the evaporator and case on 88-91 to get the blower motor removed? I hope it's not the blower motor...

There are a couple of ways to "cheat"
and not remove the evaporator housing but
I would not even waste my time with a junkyard motor..
I wouldn't get it from Honda either because they are really expensive..
I paid $228.00 for the motor and resistor several years ago.
What some people do:
Cut a small hole in the filter screen above the motor,
With a long extension,Remove the nut that holds the blade on,
Then remove the motor and then the fan blade
in two separate pieces..
What I did was to loosen the evaporator housing so it would move slightly,
And then cut a horizontial slit in the insulation/padding on the firewall
so it could be pulled out of the way, then glued back afterwards..
That gave just enough clearance
to force it out..Coating it all down with WD-40 will also help..
Be careful not to break the fan blade..
It was still a pain in the ***,But I didn't break the a/c system apart
and lose the freon.. Have fun and try not to bleed too much...
PS, Sometimes you can tap on the bottom of the motor
with a small hammer and get a little more life out of it..Not too hard..
