Okay i bought my car wrecked and im going to fix the body. My questions is, The paint on my front bumper (plastic) is peeling off and has spider cracked, what do i need to do to prep it for paint? Do i sand it down to where its not peeling? and is there a certain paint i need?
Use some 220 sandpaper to get the paint off, you dont want to get down to the bare plastic if im not mistaking, just even and smooth. You want to use some adhesion promoter for plastic too, after that i believe you can just prime sand and paint away.
Hey so I went back through the steps I used to repaint the crx bumper I did....
-I used 220 to get the paint down to the original primer at least
-Then I had hit it with some 320 to smooth it a little and then put "Bulldog" adhesion promoter ( comes in a paint gun mix or spray can, either does the same)
-Read the instructions on the promoter of how long to wait, while in that period get your primer ready. Prime it goooood, high build primer if you have any tiny nicks.
-Once the primer dries I usually wet sand it down with some 400. Rince the bumper down when your done and dry completely.
-Lay down a few coats of your base color or if your using single stage, spray it now. Once the base dries, I usually hit it with 800 wet and spray it once more, then when it dries clear the mess out of it....once the clear dries do your detailing. Hope that helps, that what I do with plastics and they come out excellent and have no issues with them.
