Default Front control arm bushing replacement

How tight are the bushings on the control arm?
No problem with the old one, I'll just destroy them.
Question is, do I need to press them in?
Thanks.

you have to use a press, 20 ton with the right adapter worked for us twice, we tried it again on boilermakers LCA's and i almost got a concussion out of it. It seems if they're seized in there, they aint comin out without a fight, boiler ended up just buying new LCA's, but we still have to figure out how to get the old ones done. either have a shop do it, or be very careful.

Ouch, that hurts.
Got the old ones out already. Sawzall the rubber and steel sleeve. Came out with no fight.
Now I just have to press them in. Maybe heat up the control arm then slide in the new bushing?
We'll see.
Thanks.

pressing the energy suspension bushings is really easy, just lube it up and push them in.

another thing you can try is to hit it with a torch and burn/melt out the old bushing..

I know it works for other bushings.

Bushing pressed in with no fight. Used a hydraulic press.

Hey,
How big of a press did you use to push that bushing in?

Honda wanted $600 to replace this bushing on both sides. It would have been $643 if they replaced both control arms as a whole (less labor, more parts cost).

Needless to say, I'm now looking into doing it myself.

my cost on 2 brand new LCA's from the dealer was a bit over $120, i dont know what retail is on that, but im sure it'd be almost double if not more. the first two times i did it. i did it with a 20 ton press.

Woah. The dealer said the control arms were $149 EACH. Maybe they only had the gold plated ones in stock.

I'm going to talk with a guy this weekend's autox to see if he can help me out. He's the parts manager at a different Honda dealer.

Thanks for the info on the press. I may get one in the future, regardless of how I replace these bushings. I've been pestering the wife about getting an '89 Si.

easiest thing to do if your steering doesnt give it away is to jack up the car, take off the front wheels and look at them. you can usually see where the bushing has seperated from the casing.

BTW, if anyone else needs to replace a bushing I would suggest taking it to Napa if they have a machine shop. There's one in my area and replacing it will cost me $35.

They're called "compliance bushings".
