I cant ride on the street anymore...
yep, im living in England now and I cant get insurance on a motorcycle here.
22 years old, in the Air Force with one minor fender bender on my record that was from April 2005. all the American companies flat out WON'T insure a motorcycle or they wont insure one under me because im not 25 years old. All the British companies wont insure me because i haven't lived here for 3 years+.
I almost bought a car today, a 1994 Citroen Xantia with 108,000 miles on it. I got the guy down to $1200 USD which is still a little expensive for the car but really not that much money at all. All I was looking for was a beater that i could get rid of in 2 years so it was perfect!
My bike will be here in about 3 weeks and i don't know what I'm going to even do with it. I love riding so much, it was my reason for picking England in the first place. One of my ideas is to just sell the bike for $5000 and put the money into an SV track bike.

Do you even need insurance over there? Is it mandatory or just a wise choice but anyway that still sucks or just buy a sick *** car that you cant over here

well, because of my job there are only 3 bases i can ever go to. Okinawa, Omaha, NE or Mildenhall England. The winters in omaha SUCK! Not to mention that they kill a pretty large chunk of the riding season out. I didn't want to go back to living on an island because i grew up in Hawaii. England sounded like a pretty good choice and I really do love it so far. The place is amazing! there are 6 tracks near by all within an hours drive. between them, there are track days 7 days a week. I was also planning on riding in the isle of man. This place is F***ing amazing, I love it! just hate the insurance, oh and how BT (British Telecommunications) has a monopoly on the phone, internet, power, water and everything else it seems like.

haha, you guys thought smog in California was bad? this place is 10 times worse. they call it MOT here. to give you an example of some other law stuff. if you get into a "minor" accident and you were talking on your phone, BOOM 2 years in prison! The laws here a strict. The words "i want my lawyer" dont work here, in fact they actually me you are saying you are guilty of the crime right there on the spot. the magic DUI # is .08 but you can still get pulled over and given a breathalyser test, blow a .02 and charged for a DUI. Actually they call it "Drink Driving" so yeah im not going to even think about driving without insurance...
:::EDIT:::
fix it tickets here are $120

LOL man it funny to hear an american saying this...
Now imagine what a south american opinion would be
Being military doesn't help you score a good deal? Being one in every part of the world has it's perks, maybe you could insure your bike if you could manage to make it look like it belongs to a fleet in your base, lots of military guys in here do that.

That really sucks man.
What I would do is have the bike reserved for track duties, buy a nice beater and scooter for the street...great MPG and very practical for daily use.
Oh, and old (From mid 90's and below) french cars are lemons. Be careful when looking at them, they are know for being a little troublesome, I would look into a Volvo or similar, they are tanks.
I would not buy an older Renault, Peugeot or Citroen...at least 98+ and you should be ok.

Will they not insure you on ANY bike? Or just not insure you on a bike you are interested in. I am pretty sure you could be down the road on a RS125/250 in no time flat, with proper insurance.

Last I knew the DUI thing is the same everyone in the United States. If you blow under the legal limit...whatever it is for each state you can get a DUI. DUI is under the limit on alcohol and you can be ticketed DUI for driving under the influence of drugs etc. DWI is over the limit on alcohol.

dude, its not the same.... My high school graduating class was over 80% Asian. Okinawa is TINY! All in all it just seemed like another Hawaiian Island. Yes England is an Island but I can drive to France and beyond.

i haven't even got as far as telling them the type of bike. USAA no longer insures motorcycles because they were losing money and Geico (over here) no longer insures riders under 25 because they were getting too many claims. the general rule for local insurance companies is "live here in the UK for 3 years" im going to keep looking and perhaps something will turn up.
also, thanks for the advise on older french cars and the like.

I've lived at both Feltwell/Mildenhall/Lakenheath, England and Kadena, Okinawa.
By far okinawa is better as far as seasons, prices, insurance, basic neccesities, and cars...bikes are cheap as well...but there is NO place to ride. And when i say no place, i mean no place.
England is the best choice out of your three picks....like you said...
I lived in Brandon while i was there....definately if you get the chance hit up downtown london...oh and if your into softball....England is the mecca for airforce softball.

Our roads beat the hell outta your roads for riding on, apart from the weather
But i'm sure you can get someone to insure you, you can always get insurance as long as you have enough money. Have you tried getting online quotes from places like http://www.ebikeinsurance.co.uk? Or pick up a few bike magazines and try all the insurance companies at the back.
And you gotta go to the isle of man, insurance or no insurance just go
The isle of man TT just hit its 100th birthday this year!

I GOT INSURANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMFG!!!!!!!
after calling 20 something places I found a place. still expensive but its what i have to work with. before i left the states, i was paying $56/month full coverage ($670/year) now in england for basic liability, its going to be bout $1300/year. I didn't get the quote but the insurance sails man said it would be at least 10 times that for full coverage.
