Default Catalytic Converter problem?

hey i live in elk grove and i need to know where i can get a catalytic converter. I had got one from auto zone and took it to a muffler shop to get my gasket for it but then the shop owner had told me that my catalytic converter is not legal in California. I don't really know what he mean by that, so he wouldn't sell me any gasket...he also says that i can use it on my prelude because when i take it to smog is not going to pass...due to the converter. The box that the converter came in also says "not for sale in California" . So if that was the case then why did auto zone sold it to me. Anyways my engine light is on because the converter is bad. So i need to change that and i need to smog check it. Is it possible if i just delete the engine light before i smog check it or just use the one in auto zone. Will they actually check my converter or know if is illegal or not?Can i pass...

just take it back to auto zone and tell them you want one that is legal in california, or you could get one from the muffler shop you went to.

I like to order all my parts online, it is sometimes cheaper. Its worth the wait. Try bolt on cat converters, so you can swap it out after you get your smog test done, and keep it you will need it again.

They sound like tarts. Try and do a google search with your type prelude year make and model. Then type cadilidic converter. And buy one that is good for Ca.

yeah you should be able to go to any online import store, or like overnightautoparts.com, and get a stock replacement. Ok took 30 seconds to check that sire, they have a direct fit for 145.00, for a 98, just caus I wasnt sure what year you had.
